Orange Contract. I want out

Evening all

Some questions hopefully someone can ask.
And if someone that works for orange is on here drop me a PM i have a question i would like to ask.

Basically ive had an orange contract for about 5 years, upgraded when upgrade time comes around for me and my wife. Cause we have gone for the top phones at the times we have been on higer tarrifs which wasnt a problem when we were both in good jobs etc. now things finacially aint the best and im looking to cut back drastically so the £100 i pay orange a month for 2 contacts is something i am looking at getting rid of.

I would like to know is there anyway of getting out of these even if we return the iphones we have we dont mind. I know ive been upgrading every so often not sure of times etc but only just realised i am in a 24 month contract with this upgrade which i was never made aware of i still have 12 months left. Really not happy about only just finding out im on a 24 month contract they didnt let me know this when i phoned to upgrade and i didnt sign anything to agree a 24month i take it orange just send out phones now and dont tell you the details. i know very ignorant by myself not knowing what im getting but i just called to say i think i might be due an upgrade the guy sadi yes he asked if i had an idea what i wanted i said iphone he sent it simple as that kept same talk plan etc but wasnt told of contract length.

So does anyone have any advise on how i can get out of the contract if i can. This £100 would go a long way with our budget and help the family out massivly. we dont really use them anymore

thanks in advance peopel

Well.. You signed up for a contract which has a minimum term, regardless to if you cannot afford it anymore or don't use the phones; you are still tied into the contract for the minimum term, unless you break the contract early and pay the early termination fee's, which is your monthly price plan times how many months you have left minus 33%.

How you could think that you could upgrade to a new phone and not be tied into a new minimum term contract is beyond me. I'm sure Orange would have made you quiet aware of what you where signing up too. fyi, you need not sign anything if you are upgrading.

You only get the 33% off if you move to ee, which are expensive too so i doubt that's something you'd do. You would just have to pay it all off, although you pay be able to get the tariffs reduced if you ring 150. orange will generally go down one tariff level after 6 months.

Basically you can't - you best option is to sell the phones and buy cheap £10 phones to use with the SIM until the term is up.

    Hmmm...

I hear that iThings keep their value, so can't you and your wife sell your iToys and use the proceeds to pay off Orange?

Assuming, of course, that Appal :) allow you to sell your iThings.
  • Thanks for replies.

When upgrading i was aware i would be back into a contract term but didnt realise it was a 24 month term.

Selling the phones might be the best plan of action to get out of this thanks for advise

You should have asked at the time if you where unsure!, best plan of action would be look into selling the iPhones (While they are still holding their value)

In this case it is worth considering cancelling contacts and paying the Early Termination Fee about 100*12*5/6=1000, i.e. saving £200 in total.
You can get free 100+100+200Mb on Ovivo instead.

The question then would be; what did you think was the term you agreed to and what led you to believe that?

Have you previously upgraded and had a shorter minimum term? What does your bill say about the tariff?

Death or bankruptcy are the only valid methods of voiding your contract without penalty. It's up to you to establish the minimum term when upgrading. Smartphones are expensive devices, and in order to subsidise them, the minimum terms are longer.
Best way out is to sell the handsets and put that towards the rest of the monthly fees.
The fact that you didn't sign anything is irrelevant: you have used the service for 12m, so you are most certainly in a binding contract.

If you believe the term of contract was less than 2 years, contact the provider and ask them to provide evidence that they made you clearly aware of the length of contract.

If you got the upgrade by phone then likely the call would have been recorded.
