We have found a kitten.....help!

Hello,
This is my first post so please be kind.
Basically I have found a kitten in an abandoned garage yesterday she /he is very very skinny but is alert. I took her to a friend of mine who is experienced with kittens and she has said she believes that the kitten is around 7 weeks old. I took her home last night and she has eaten some kitten food quite happily with no problems. I have booked him/her into the vets today at midday to get checked over as I want her to be healthy. We are hoping to keep the kitten so I am just after some advice on what to do about litter training feeding and what sort of behaviour we should expect with her having a less than perfect start to life!

Firstly I wouldn't rule out the kitten having no owner. Imagine how you would feel if your kitten had gotten lost and someone found her and kept her without making an effort to find you.
Get the vet to scan her for a chip and then make some 'found' posters for local petshops, vets, etc. - perhaps ring around the neighbouring areas too incase kitty has strayed a bit (maybe climbed in the back of a van, been stolen and dumped etc. There are several websites online you can post 'found' cats too.
OK, the kitten is fairly young to have been in a home and then been lost already but you never know, I would be heartbroken to lose a pet and then moreso if I found out it was alive and well but someone else had just decided to keep it.0 -
Sorry I should have been more clear we did door knock everyone around the area the garages are at the bottom of a cul de sac we were told that mother cat had been thrown out of her home when she got pregnant and numerous neighbours have been putting food out for it. There was another kitten that got attacked by a dog and was killed. We were told by everyone we had asked that the kitten was abandoned however no one would take it in for reasons only known to themselves. We will def get it checked for a chip though. I just could not leave it in a wet dirty garage with no food. We could not find the mother cat though0

The main thing at the vets is a good wormer, dont go buying from pet shops. Also check for fleas and lice, and get something from the vets to stop him/her picking up any. Check ears for earmites.
Most kittens instinctively use litter trays- just plonk them on it and 'dig' it with their paw, then usually click on then. Keeping the kitten more confined until its 100% with the litter tray is best- no wandering behind settes unsupervised!
Thanks for giving little kitty a home.DONT BREED OR BUY WHILE HOMELESS ANIMALS DIE. GET YOUR ANIMALS NEUTERED TO SAVE LIVES.0 -
moggymutt,
Many thanks for that we are taking kitty to the vet in about an hour so I am hoping that they help us with the worming and flea treatment I just want to make sure its healthy because in my opinion it is very very skinny!!
I don't suppose anyone knows if we need to help it go to the toilet I have read online that sometimes they need some extra help!! and would the vet beable to help us with this??0 -
At 7 weeks the kitten should be able to go to the toilet on its own, but it wont be microchipped at this age, the mum has more likely had the kittens outside if shes been thrown out,
Why people do this instead of having the cat spayed, its disgusting, poor cat its not her fault, its nature.
Does anyone know where mum is now, there could be more kittens from this litter,
The main thing is it needs worming and building upGood luck at the vets, do let us know how you get on please0 -
And by the way if the kitten did have an owner and let it get out at this age they need shooting, should know better,0

Many thanks for your reply we know there are no other kittens in the garage at least as they were in such a state that the council were called and all the rubbish was removed very carefully I add as we wanted to make sure there were no others! As far as I know from speaking to neighbours there has only been 2 seen the one we have and the one that was lost to the dog....poor thing. Froom what i understand mum is around the area but is just not that keen on people but she is getting fed by one of the neighbours which is a relief. The man who is feeding mum has said if he can he will try and catch her and take her to a cat rescue or call the rspca. I will post when we get back from the vets with an update many thanks for your replies0

Well done on helping the poor thing.
Oh and if you do keep kittie, we need pictures once he/she has settled in0 -
Well we have returned from the vets and we have a boy who is approx 8 weeks old. He has been wormed and been de flead he is quite underweight but that is to be expected i guess the vet has suggested that we take him back in a week to see if he has put any weight on and if he has he will have his first round of jabs. My other half has already named him " bella " slightly girly but i don't think he will be bothered...... I am looking to get him insured so if anyone has any suggestions of the best companies to use that would be great many thanks for the help so far0
