Windows 7 or Windows 8 laptop?

What is the point of upgrading from 7 to 8 then paying for a third party product that makes Windows 8 look like Windows 7.I think the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us.0

I like the under the hood improvements on Win8, but am less keen on the Metro UI.
My laptop boots from cold about 30s faster. My desktop that has an SSD now boots to the desktop in 24s. I also get visibly better framerates in Skyrim.
In the case of the laptop I'd only reinstalled Win7 about a week before I decided to try Win8 on it, so it was a fair test not subject to Windows Rot.
Worth it to me, and the £2 to get the original start menu back is just the icing on the cake.0 -
My computer boots in 30s using Win 7 SSD with a I5 processor.
Windows 8 in my opinion tries to be too many thingsI think the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us.0 -
Mine is a bit older than that, so the difference is perhaps more noticible. SSDs do make a hell of a difference on their own though.
Win8 can be tweaked to be what you want, just the same as I had to tweak Win7 due to the missing XP-style status bar.
Some people on Win7 or 8 install an app called Classic Shell to bring back the Windows 98-style start menu!
Isn't choice wonderful

1.0 out of 5 stars Hinge whinge, 1 July 2012

Shadow Cabinet "Shadow Cabinet" (Bolivia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lenovo G570 15.6 inch Laptop - Black (Intel Core i5 2450M 2.5GHz, 6GB RAM, 750GB HDD, DVDRW, LAN, WLAN, Webcam, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit) (Personal Computers)
If you're looking for a good reason not to buy this laptop, google 'Lenovo G570 hinge'.
After 5 months the left hinge may break, as did mine. If you look on Lenovo's own customer forums, you will see this is very common. Yet, customers have typically been charged for sending their laptops back to service centres (waiting up to two weeks), only to be told the problem is not covered by the warranty.
It may be that many never experience this problem. I would say it's not worth the risk. If I could go back and buy a model by a different manufacturer, I would.
This is my first review in many years of using Amazon. Trust it. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews

Others have made the same complaint. I'm avoiding Lenovo products.
I'm quite sceptical of "hinge issues" because of the sheer number of customers I have at work who I have to effectively tell off for manhandling laptop lids at the corners. The savages don't understand basic physics.0 -
I don't know that specific model but at my workplace the Lenovos we have generally stand up to the abuse thrown at them by the developers a lot better than the Dells that replaced them.
They may have changed the design since then though. These were Thinkpad T61s.0 -
Sorry to butt into this thread but I'd be really grateful for your views on this.
I have the opportunity to pick up one of these
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Acer-AMD-C50-Processor-Wireless-Bluetooth/dp/B004SHEQ06/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1352778111&sr=8-2
including keyboard, cheaply as owner is upgrading to one of the new hybrid win 8 laptops.
It is currently running win 7, so my thought is to upgrade to win 8.
I just want it as a second machine for when I am away from the house, and to try out win 8 on a touchscreen.
Does that look like a workable idea? (I am not techie so I don't need detailed explanation, just bullet points for/against would be great)
ThanksI'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -

Daisy what are you and Lum doing up at stupid o'clock in the morning?:D
I think you should start a thread about the Acer tablet. I have no thoughts about it myself. The Amz.UK reviews look positive. I couldn't find it on Amz.US but did find some mention of it on www.techradar.com. I hope it is the tablet you're asking about because that's where the link leads to on Amzon.
If you're on about a laptop then you need the model number e.g. Acer 5733. Check the reviews on https://www.amazon.com as well as the UK site. Our cousins in the USA seem to have a love/hate relationship with Acer laptops.:j I hope my comment helps :T0 -
I would have a play on both before you purchase. If you have done so all ready go with what you prefer because it wont make much difference as windows 7 is still a good operating system its just that windows 8 looks better (in my opinion).0

I'm probably being an old foggie about windows 8.:j I hope my comment helps :T0
