Withdrawing Cash in £5 denominations

I normally withdraw cash from a cash machine. However, I've recently sorted out my money and have worked out I can afford to spend £25 cash a week on miscellaneous things. As most cash machines only dispense in £10s and £20s I went into my local Halifax branch to draw out at the counter. I was then told I could draw a minimum of £300 out. I work in a Halifax branch (Im at university so this was the branch in my uni town) and told the cashier that on a Current Account you can draw any amount at the counter and its only a Cardcash where you must use the machine. She disagreed with me, and said she'd do it this once but not in future.
Im so frustrated as this particular branch seem to have their own rules for everything! I accept that it's better to use the machines but seeing as the machines don't want to give out £5 notes what am I supposed to do?! The cashier had the cheek to tell me I'd have to pay some in so I could get £10 out the machine, and I'm like I've got several hundred in the account its just due to me budgeting I only want £5!
Sorry for this rant, I just wondered if anyone had had similar problems in a Halifax, and on another note does anyone know which banks cash machines dispense £5s?

I'm just glad I only have savings accounts there, and not my bank account... you might find this thread from yesterday quite interesting:

The banks have stopped putting £5 notes in cash machines for one reason - to make money!
I have a shop and we have to get £100 - £150 in £5 notes from our bank every day because loads of people come in fresh from the cash machine with a crisp £10 or £20 note. The thing is, our bank charges us for any change we get from them so by not putting fivers in their machines, we mugs in the retail sector have to get a stock of them in - which costs us in bank charges!

Haven't checked it for a while, but there was a Barclays CP near me that still dished out £5 notes.0

This really bugs me too. I have to pay my sons bus fares too and from school but its not as simple as drawing out a fiver on a Saturday. I have to cash myself a cheque and take it to the counter. So i make them work for their money. I ask them for :
£2 in 20ps
£1 in 10ps
£1 in 5ps
£1 in 2ps
They run from their desks when they see me.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

rainbow21..... couldnt you take £20 one week, knowing that next week you could take £30..... and then carry it forward..... that way you might even find you have a surplus at the end of the month.....
my OH and I, take £50 each week.... at the end of the week if we have some left ie between £5 and £10 (not often), we would then only take £40 the following week.....smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

Halifax cash machines have a limit of £300/day. So, for amounts of £300 or less you are encouraged to use a cash machine. If you wish to withdraw over £300 in a day they will of course assist.
It's just a way of keeping costs down!
Why don't you withdraw £30 one week and £20 the next?0 -
Hi All,
So far as I know, the Barclays machine nearish to my Uni dispensed £5 notes too, although I barely ever use cash machines, get paid in cash.
In the newsagents I work at, I agree with GlennTheBaker as the owner has to bring in loads of £5 notes each week, as the Co-Op over the road has a cash machine (free to use too!), which only ever dispenses £10 and £20 notes, so we take loads of these in and end up with no fivers!
Cheers

I was under the impression that most cash machines on a Uni campus would dispense £5 notes.
It did when I used the HSBC one. Mind you that was a few years ago.
Do you have more than one cash machine at on campus that does not charge so you could take £25 out.

In my late teens (in the mid 90s) I was always wanting to withdraw cash in £5 denominations - this was just about the time that most banks started phasing out £5 withdrawals. I do remember that Barclays kept on stocking £5 notes way after everybody else stopped - it looks like this may still be the case, as Barclays have already been mentioned a couple of times on this thread.
These days my weekly cash budget is a multiple of £10 anyway, but if I ever need £5, I just get £10 out and stash the remainder for the following week.Operation Get in Shape
