OK dishwasher experts, any idea why my dishwasher often leaves a lingering smell of wet dog on my stuff? I've got salt in and clean it so it is sparkly but at least half of the washes have this disgusting smell left on the plates and cups when the wash is finished.

Tried lots of different tablets as well.

Hmm well mine smelt like dead hamster!

I found it needed one of those cleaners and after this is where it gets gross the rubber at the bottom of the dishwasher was fully of gravy coloured gunk - got rid of that and we don't smell of roses but dead hamsters are no more!
  • Every now and then, I get a little stardrops or Wash up liquid and a dishbrush and give the rubber seals on the machine a scrub. I then swill some water over them to rinse them off and put about half a teacup of cheapo bleach(thin stuff) in the machine and put it on a was. All clean-no dead rodents!

Freebird sheepishly raises a hand and admits to using Finish 5in1 powerballs (whatever they are...they were on special inTesco), salt AND rinse aid....am in VERY hard water area though....not that it's any excuse.

By the way, angelatgraceland - is your avatar a Swarovski Xmas angel ornament? :D

Yes-it was washed with "stardrops" though! hahahaha

I've read on here before that you can stick clothes washing powder in the dishwasher, but was never sure - any more experiences? Don't like the sound of soapy dishes! Also, is it totally safe? We've got a pretty flash Maytag dishwasher (obviously bought on Visa before LBM!) and don't want to risk damaging it!

We have really nasty water around here with loads of limescale. I use salt & rinse aid (cheapest I can find), and at the moment using Finish 3-in-1 as well but only because they were REALLY cheap at Makro and we bulk bought months ago. I tried the tablets without the salt/RA but got loads of sand all over the stuff int he top basket - any ideas?

Also, does it matter what colour the vinegar is? Do you put it in the rinse aid dispenser exactly the same way?

Lastly, what happens if you cut one of the tablets with the pink ball in it down the middle? Do you cut the ball as well, or does that stop it from doing what it is meant to do (whatever that is!)?
  • I use a sponge and my own, soft, ladylike hands! Dishwashers? What are you lot, rich?? :rotfl:

How do you think we all got into debt pete? :o

I use Tesco cheapo dishwasher powder and nothing else, but we do have soft water here. By the way, whoever was asking, you can get Stardrops in Morrisons too but they are cheaper in Asda and Wilkinsons!

I live in a soft water area, and have not needed to use any salt or rinseaid.
I use one tablespoons of powder from Lidl's and that's it. If the machine gets stinky I put it on a wash with half a lemon in it.
There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.

My repair man had a dickie fit when he found out I use that. Said it does more harm than good (can't remember why now though)
