I would disagree for a number of reasons. First the OP will only have limited knowledge until they try and use the program and read some tutorials on it. Second I disagree that informing someone about a free but technical bit of software is a mistake, they can at least investigate it without any financial risk and decide if it is for them. Third I don't think handbrake is that hard to use with its presets anyway.

I only suggested the need for VLC since previous handbrake versions used it for the deCSS libraries it uses to decode straight from disc for a DVD though it seems handbrake no longer supports this so you would need to use fab decrypter or similar to remove CSS first.

For the benefit of the OP the work flow of getting from DVD to a video file (most likely mp4) is something like this. Decrypt dvd to files on your hard drive, use the files as a source for handbrake or similar program and out put to a different file name, copy new file to the tablet computer using a USB connection and play on tablet. This is greatly simplified, but is the general flow of what you would need to do.

I was replying to the suggestion that it could be claimed a DVD was legally copied in the USA. I believe that it is best to direct people to the correct legal position (civil or otherwise).

It is legal to stream movies online (e.g., LOVEFiLM), watch YouTube, and similar.

I tried Handbrake for the 1st time at the weekend and my result movie was very pixellated - any obvious tweaks please?
