  • Many thanks, started off intending to get one of these but after advice from several people, got the Tab. I think I shall leave now as most frustrating day! Thanks for your time
  • while it certainly might be illegal to transfer from your own dvd to your tablet for personal use it's much the same as copying tv shows to vhs or dvd recorder surely and with the same risk of being arrested, ie virtually zero.

The problem is, nearly all the software that claim to be easy to use are bogus. They will have a fancy website, with pictures of retail software boxes, and offer a guaranteed refund. But once you've paid and found out it doesn't work, they won't refund you. Then what can you do? You can hardly complain to trading standards that the illegal software you purchased doesn't work.

Just do a search for "handbrake" on google, it is a free open source program that will convert various video formats to ones suitable for the iphone and ipad mainly, but they should work on most other tablets too. You may also need the program VLC for handbrake to be able to convert directly from a DVD disc.

Yeah, technically you will be violating copyright, but since no one has any way to detect you converting videos for your own personal use there is in practice little risk. Also, copyright violation of this sort would only draw a civil suit, you would never be arrested for it.

The OP's intention is that their husband will be watching movies while flying. They certainly should not watch illegal copies of the latest Hollywood blockbusters while flying to/from the USA.
  • Thank you for your advice but I have now got so confused -what is VLC? I have spent hrs trying trial versions but cant view them or get them onto my tablet and I know it is just me and so frustrating:(

With the greatest of respect, advising someone who has limited technical knowledge to use handbrake is a bit pointless.

VLC is a free video player that will pretty much play anything you throw at it.

If you're going to want to play videos on an android tablet though, you need this - it's one of the best players available.

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mxtech.videoplayer.ad&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5teHRlY2gudmlkZW9wbGF5ZXIuYWQiXQ..

You can pay for the ad-free "pro" version, but the free version will still play anything you want.

in the states, it is legal to make personal copies of films under "fair use" terms, so at a push, he might be able to argue that he made the copies on US soil - it's a stretch, but it's possible. but, in reality, it's very highly unlikely that he'll ever be caught.

anyway, the simplest option is to use the program "DVD Fab". It's an all-in-one solution to rip DVD's to the required video file format you can then put on your tablet. Off the top of my head though, you might have to pay for the full version though - there's a free, cut down version, but I haven't used it in some time so I can't remember if it rips to AVI mode.

    Watch this video guide ..

and then get the software here ..

    http://www.dvdfab.com/dvd-ripper.htm

just worked out it'll roughly cost you £21 quid for the full, legal version of the software, but it'll really do all you want in a few clicks and is, in my opinion, the easiest option.
  • Many thanks,we fly soon so I think it will be best for me to leave this until I have the time to deal - I really have NO knowlegde, wouldnt know where to put the converted videos to or how to get on to my tab, let alone how to watch them - I have NO technical knowledge at all and have got so confused the last fews days - have told him he will have to read on the flight as normal - we were going to rent the films but as they are all mainly black & white films which are older than us!!! we couldnt do this either. Thank you again and I will update re your assistance when I have the courage to try again!

I would look at either imtoo (unless the DVDs are very new) or DVDfab as they offer straightforward conversion, with imtoo you just open the disc, choose your profile (it has profiles for tablets) and convert it.

In the USA it is illegal, under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), to break the Content Scramble System (CSS) encryption used on DVDs. DVD ripping software is now always developed and sold from outside the USA for this reason.
