Cats/dogs on the bed - what are your thoughts?

Have just been reading the 'how often do you change your bedding' thread and a few people mention cats/dogs on the bed, and even under the covers.

Just wondering what the general consensus on having pets sleep on/in the bed is? I do allow mine on the bed (and in it ocassionally :o) but am a little bit 'ashamed' if that's the right word as I got the impression it's generally a bot socially unacceptable so was surprised that nobody had commented negatively on the bedding thread.

Wouldn't be right without them snuggled up on the bed, actively encourage it!

Mine are allowed in winter but not in summer. Not the most consistent rule but its really more about keeping my feet the right temperature.

I couldn't care less what is socially acceptable in my own home! :)

My cat sleeps on the bed, occasionally under the duvet when it's cold. I like it, and so does she. Happy cat, happy me!

My cat merrily digs about in his litter tray. I'm certainly not going to then allow him to walk with those same feet on my bed, in much the same way I wouldn't allow him to walk on the work surface. I understand many people also allow that though so each to their own.

Dogs walk about barefoot on fields where other dogs have previously done their toilet too so the same applies to them (be very surprised to see a dog walking about on the work surface though!).

my cat sleeps on the end of my bed, sometimes right in the middle on it, so I'm pushed to one side , and about a week ago he tried to get under the duvet in the cold weather. I don't mind him at all being on the beds, but I don't want him under the covers (because he'd wake me up when I or he moved).

On the bed, cats in it, for me. We have no ch now and the cats ate warmer, and warm me.....but they did it always beore that too. It feels wonderful.

They are not allowed on my kitchen worksurfaces though. Neither do I walk on my worksurfaces:)
  • I love when my cats honour me with bedtime cuddles but I prefer them not to sleep on the bed during the day as they shed all over it. Especially the wee one - honestly, I could knit myself another cat every week if I collected his hair!

Can you train a cat not to do things? Mine are stubbourn things who get up to mischief when I am not looking. Sitting on the dining table is one, occasionally the work surfaces. They know they are not allowed but still do it when they think I am not looking. There doesn't seem to be anything I can do to stop it.

I let mine on top of the covers but not underneath

In the summer my cat comes through to the bedroom and on to the bed when ever she wants. When the heating goes on the doors are shut so she has to be taken through and when she wants back for food etc she will wake me up by gently stroking my face.

Its so sweet to wake up and find her cuddled up purring gently.

I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

Our two cats have their own beds downstairs. We love them and they have the best of everything but I could not have cat hairs in or on the bed. No way!

I don't allow it only because we have 9 cats and they fight (especially the girls). The most we ever managed was 5 in/on the bed with us, and they drove us nuts until I lost my temper at 3am and sent them all flying. Now the bedroom door is shut at all times.
