What a great post! Wish I'd found it before something ate my beloved basil
To everyone who has a chili plant, mine almost died when it started raining heavily and the wind blew like mad, I have since read that they need to be kept as warm and sunny as possible at all times.Three years, six months, three weeks, 13 hours, 48 minutes and 30 seconds. 26011 cigarettes not smoked, saving $11,704.80. Life saved: 12 weeks, 6 days, 7 hours, 35 minutes.0 -
Even the quickest growing toms take about 65 days to fruit, so by the time they got going it'd be......end of September and getting a bit chilly/lower light levels.
If you want toms this year, you could buy a couple of fruiting plants and keep them in pots. If you bring into the house at the end of the season, before it gets too cold and before you have your heating on and can provide them with alot of light, they will keep going. They get very leggy even in a big south facing window, but you can get fruit ripened on them.
If the thing survives the winter, you can take cuttings off it (whack off a six inch growing shoot, dip it in hormone rooting powder and plant it in a well drained mix), which will then roar away in the spring and give you a jump start on next season's crop.
Have fun.0 -
My garden is doing really well. Chilli's and peppers are coming along. Courgettes are going mad and the tomatoes are going to be bountiful when they ripen. :j
My neighbour gave me a couple of seed potatoes a few months ago and I left them in the shed for ages, I planted them, not expecting much to happen and lo and behold today I harvested them and there were huge amounts of potatoes - red and white!
I was like a child at Xmas. :rotfl:
The potatoes were very big (baking size) - is that because I left them for too long or just the variety they are?0 -

Now is the time many plants are coming in to seed. For hints on collecting and storing seeds...

MrsMW wrote:Our local flower shop sells black flower buckets for 10p, if you put a few holes in the bottom they are great for growing tomatoes and veg in. Last year I grew some carrots which are called Parmex, they are round and ideal for growing in pots or window boxes.0

I am new to this site but it looks good.
I am growing loads of plants from seeds at the moment in my little plastic greenhouse at the bottom of my garden.
A dragon plant which will give me dragon fruit, it is a cacti.
An avacado tree I doubt I will get fruit but it is still pretty!
A new potato tree, it has loads of buds already, I love the dark green leaves but how do you know when they are ready to be harvested?
Rice plant! You have to use wild rice, not the white polished stuff.
I would love to grow something that involves the green, yellow and red pepers, does nayone know if it can be done in UK?0 -
Swiss chard is a bit like spinach but you can eat the stalks as well. Cut the leaves off the stalks and wilt them on a low heat in a saucepan with little or no water in it. Serve like spinach. Cut the leaves into 2" lengths and cook them in a little water. Drain and serve with a knob of butter. Lovely. I also put them in a veggie casserole some times for a change. Very versatile veg. Will over winter but gets a bit knocked about by the frost and then goes to seed in the spring. But if you pick it quick it is delicious.:0

I'm growing 2 types of tomato, peppers and courgettes. I've tried garlic without success, but fingers crossed I'll have more luck with these.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0

I just have a paved yard. We do have a few pots that are about 30-50cm deep. Can someone give me some advice of things I could grow. Already have a herb pot.

Hi tazladytaz,
Since this thread started we were given a gardening board and that's where you're most likely to get help so I'll move this thread across to the Greenfingered board and hopefully you'll get lots of suggestions.
