I've just picked my first produce!! Grabbed some lettuce before the slugs demolished all of it and thinned out my carrots and am giving the tiny baby carrots to the little with her tea :D

I'm so envious of all your successes, I was in the garden today and things are either eaten by slugs, snails, birds, black fly or the dog, not humans though!!
I've bought lettuces, carrots, sunflowers, cornflowers, things I can't remember the name of, attractive shrubs and aubergines, peppers, sweetcorn and not had one bite from any of them (not all at the same time because I seem to think that a different plant might grow)! The only thing that seems to be growing are the strawberries I bought last year which at last today I have actually seen tiny green berries appearing and I've placed (not attached properly) netting over it to stop birds (hopefully only stupid birds will come into the garden and look at the netting and eat from the birdseed I've left). I will have to educate the birds though as I don't mind them eating sunflower seeds that might be in a birdseed mix but I want them to know the difference between them and ones that I plant which should grow!

Will slugs & snails eat the strawberries or is that a stupid question? I have got lupins that I've tried growing before and someone gave me some copper strips which I've put round a pot and have actually got them growing this time, though only leaves at the moment, hope to eventually get flowers!

Slugs eat everything, the blighters. Put down loads and loads of pellets. Go out with a spray bottle and salt solution. Also try crushed egg shells round your plant. The corn maybe taking a while to germinate - it looks like grass to begin with. Some things need a warm soil to germinate and the weather has been very changeable of late. Aubergines need to be started off inside, most people seem to grow those in greenhouses.

Personally I have no patience with leaving stuff outside to germinate. I start them off in propagtors inside in paper pots, then plant them outside no need to disturb the roots as the paper rots. Stuff takes too long to germinate outside.

I garden organically so slug pellets are out but it is so tempting when you see the damage. I have got a couple of slug pubs that I move around but the best way is to protect seedlings and young plants with whatever you can. At the moment my lettuce are under cut off plastic bottles (the tops of two litre plastic bottles) but you could make a frame from old windows (from the tip or double glazing places.

Once the plants are established, they stand a chance against slugs. If you got out with a torch you can pick them off every night. I sprinkle cheap salt on them but there are nicer and nastier ways.

My winter cabbages are ready now and I've found slugs on them, they get thrown to the hens but I know I'll have to be out there with the salt once I put in new plants. For me, it's a case of controlling them rather than eradicating them, nice though that would be!

I've still got half the garden empty though and I'm looking for things that will produce towards the end of the year. Is it too late now or is there something I can put in now?

    Hello,

I saw that rhubarb was mentioned earlier in the thread. I bought a little plant from a car boot sale a month ago and planted it in the garden, but it looks less healthy and happy than when we first bought it so I'm afraid it might die. Can anyone suggest what I can do to help it, maybe a certain plant feed?

    Thanks, Sarah

Can you get hold of some seedlings (I saw kale, beans and cabbage at a boot sale today) to fill the gaps. Failing that some lettuce or turnips
