Sweet tree help please

Thanks to this site have made a sweet tree managed to get the giant choc buttons to stick with Tesco essential choc spread but DS says that they 'leak' into the buttons and make them taste sugary and nasty, any ideas how to stick the giant buttons or any kind of unwrapped sweet to the polysterine ball without the choc spread?

Thanks

I've not done this myself but I expect edible glue would do the trick

ETA - cross posted with your picture - that looks fab! I saw someone recently make chocolate pinecones with buttons by layering them and sticking them together with melted chocolate...they looked really good and did away with the polystyrene ball. They were like these (but with added bits of edible glitter around the edges of the cones to make them sparkle). I've been thinking about making some up myself.

I tried edible glue thanks for that but to me it went all bulky and gluggy, like big blobs of glue and DS hated it, the way it looked, how it spilt all over the place and looked amateurish, I have bought a glue gun and that is easy for the likes of ferrero rocher that are wrapped.

Sometimes with ferrero and the likes you need to add a bit more glue to the inside of the brown paper and glue on the outside so it sticks well.

I have used cocktail sticks for flying saucers and that worked well

I bought the edible glue from ebay but just did not seem to get on with it

How about just using a plain sugar icing? Or maybe even caramelised sugar? That sets ROCK hard lol But no idea if it would melt the chocolate before it set?

How does caramilized sugar work? Do I heat it up and then put it on the ball? Uhm hot to giant buttons not sure, by the time it had cooled down would it have lost its stickiness?

    Off to google,.....:D

I've tried brushing melted chocolate on the ball and then putting a little on the sweet to attach it, my only concern is some of the ball comming away with the sweet. Tonight i have covered the ball in coloured rice paper, stuck to the ball with icing brushed on. tomorrow i will attempt to attach the sweets! will keep you posted on the results.

This is a lovely idea, and reminded me of something my mother used to do at Christmas after living in America. She would tie wrapped sweets around a coat hanger that she bent into a circle (using little bits of wool tied around the twisted bit in the sweet wrapping). She used all sorts of different sweets and would eventually have a sort of wreath of sweets. The she would tie a red ribbon in a bow at the top, attach a small pair of scissors on a peice of ribbon to the wreath, and hang it on a door. Anyone who wanted a sweet could just cut one from the wreath. It would last for ages, and everyone of all ages had fun choosing sweets and cutting them off.

The sweet wreath is fab and I think I will have a go at that. Just not sure where to get the sweets. Any ideas?
