How about just taking your shoes off and wearing soft fluffy slippers and trying not to tread too hard on the bedroom floor?

Agree - also put a thick rug in the middle of the room and its cheaper!

The guy in the flat above my friend had wooden floors. Until she pointed out she could hear everything he and his boyfriend did. He got carpet after that.

I'm not sure I'd want to live under that flat!

It was definitely a 'More tea, vicar' moment. Hearing him pee was bad enough; he seemed to have a bladder the size of the Isle of Wight. When I stayed round there, the peeing was loud enough to wake me up in the middle of the night.

You've done nothing wrong in putting down wood floor, you've spent money on it and you've made it look how you want it to look. I wouldn't want to change it because of that and hide those lovely wood floors! So no, you shouldn't have to go to the additional expense of putting down carpet, especially since that's not how you want your room to look.

However, in a flat you do have to be considerate. As others have said, take off your shoes (females with high heels especially) and if it fits the decor then put down a rug/runner, especially if there's a particular place you walk a lot. Try to avoid walking around too much at night (I don't mean that have to sit in silence, just don't start jumping around to exercise videos late at night).

I know it's annoying when you have too much "living noise" from your neighbours - at least if they are playing loud stereos you can get the council involved! In my old flat we could hear literally every word our downstairs neighbours said, and all flats had carpet there. We couldn't hear the guy upstairs. In our new flat it's wood floors throughout all floors and we can only hear very muffled footsteps occasionally from our upstairs neighbours (noone below us here). Must be better insulation in the new place.

I can't believe your neighbour tried to tell you how to lay out your rooms though - absolutely nothing to do with them! Because of that I'd say they're the type of person who will always moan, and you will never make them happy - so apart from being generally considerate, I definitely wouldn't give in to them on the wood floors.

I live under a flat like that. Thankfully not all week. But I live by myself and although they seem nice I am too scared to complain in case they break my door down or do any other unmentionables when I am not there.

So when boyfriend is around I have to put up with them going up and down the stairs, playing music, telly really loud and doing the unmentionable in their creaky bed. I even think they have carpet...

Creaky beds are so embarassing! how can anyone get into it and concentrate with something rhythmically squeaking away?
