MSE News: Free £5 for Amex holders when they spend a fiver

Beware: as someone has already said, for some stupid reason, there are establishments/shops listed on the Amex website, who aren't actually part of the scheme.
I signed up to this yesterday, and promptly tried it in my local participating bar. Two beers, and two whisky chasers (seeing as Amex were kindly giving me a fiver). I hand them my Amex card and the machine won't accept it.
I won't stop going to this bar (it's my local after all) but after this experience I won't be making any special trips to take advantage of this offer, which is a shame for all the places that are part of the scheme.0 -

Or simply call them first and ask if they accept Amex.
As per this post in the main thread, if you contact Amex and tell them that this bar is incorrectly listed, they may give you the £5 anyway

Make a complaint online via the email thing in account management. I did that and they credited me the £5 anyway and reported the merchant as every merchant on the list has an agreement with Amex.0 -

..or, you know, you could ask if they accept Amex before you buy

Wondering how best to do this given that the card I'm using is a Lloyds TSB avios one. Do I contact Lloyds or American Express? The former doesn't seem to accept emails so I could be stuck on the phone for ages. I've found several shops that either don't take Amex or have closed.0 -
Registered this morning. Just been in our local takeaway, paid £16.50 with Amex and while waiting for it, got an email from Amex to say thanks, your £5 cashback will credited in 3-5 days!0

Hmm...Don't have much of a solution there then haha. Only seen actual Amex members with it. Only thing I can think of is the AskAmexUK twitter account.0 -
Yesterday evening I went to my local Sizzling Pub, listed in the Amex 'Shop Small' guide. When I tried to pay with my card the manager told me they had never taken Amex and never would and Sizzling Pubs, as a chain, would never sign up to an Amex promotion. I've checked the Amex website again today, loads of Sizzlings Pubs all over the country are listed - anyone else been refused?0

None of the merchants have signed up and they don't pay the cashback, Amex do. If they are saying they don't accept Amex then call Amex and tell them. Amex will take them off the list and may still give you the £5 cashback as per the poster in the other thread0 -
I love this deal! So far I've been to 6 different shops and saved £30!
Earrings I would have bout anyway for 6.30 instead of 11.30
Birthday cards for 30p instead of 5.30
Lunch for free!
Benefit primer for 4.50 instead of 9.50
Wine for 2.99 instead of 7.99
Chocolates for 90p instead of 5.90
As soon as I got home I had 6 emails from Amex confirming the cashback. Still have loads of places to go to, getting a bit obsessed with this now!May'18 DEBT FREE!
