Admin Charges by Car Insurers
Comments

The union at British Gas posted some research on the noticeboards afew months ago showing a UK callcentre cost on average #20 to #25 per hour per calltaker to run (including overheads and management), and around #8 to #10 for an overseas centre.
I changed cars two days ago and I'm insured with Admiral. Although I paid them some money they didn't mention any admin fees, I thought it was all additional premium, but I will be checking closely when the policy documents come through!
They did mention durig a previous discussion if I cancelled my insurance there is a #45 admin fee.0 -
Admiral charged me £14.50 when I transfered my old number plate to my new car. I emailed to complain that it was unfair and they refunded the £14.50 back.0

funny how the insurance companies change their attitude depending on the time of year - I posted above about being charged to put another driver on my policy last year, that was a month or so after renewal.
In the last couple of weeks I have had to have a courtesy car (due to mine being in the garage) and had to put it on my insurance and extend it several times (so quite a few updates on the policy) and they never charged me a penny. This happened 3 weeks before my renewal was due! When it was all finished I then cancelled my policy as direct line were 200 quid cheaper this year
I did notice on my new policy that they say mid-term updates to the policy would add an admin charge up to 14.95 (I think). I guess "mid-term" means from the date the policy start up to about 1 month from renewal :rolleyes:0 -
Does it really cost £90 an hour to employ someone to sit at a phone?!
See my post #44
you are conveniently ignoring the software & hardware costs, electricity, rent, council tax, employers NI, pensions etc.
£90 does sound too much though, so you can make a complaint and there is an ombudsman that can officiate if you get nowhere with a complaint.
Don't know what sort of change you are making but £90 sounds too high for one change.
Having low premiums (with no admin fees factored in) and then £25 in admin fees seems quite reasonable however.
Why should people like me that plan well and are organised, have to pay for people that make lots of changes? (yes I know some things can't be planned, I'm being "devils advocate").0 -
£90 sounds like an admin charge and insurance premium adjustment. £90 just for admin sounds a bit too heavy.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). Think someone was extrapolating what they were charged for 10 mins work to an hourly rate?
You are right. Oops.
Of course, it doesnt matter that its £90 an hour equivalent as business turnover doesnt give any indication of the profit.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). Having just been charged £15 in admin charges when I informed my new car insurers (The Post Office) that I had changed cars, and having never been charged any admin fee whenever I changed anything at all before by my old insurers (NFU), I wondered if we should get a list of who charges for changes and how much they are and who doesn't?
So far I have:-
Charges
The Post Office - £15.00
Doesn't Charge
The National Farmers Union
Hi there
You have a very good and valid point here. The answer to your question is "Yes." There is a list of companies who do and don't charge for administration etc. of your policy. The compiled list also details exactly how much they charge and how this compares to the average charge.
This is in the form of a Motor Insurance Guide which will soon be available to view over the internet (within a month). I am informed that the Guide is having the finishing touches applied and as soon as it is on-line I will let you know here first.
Kind regards0 -

..perchance are you in any way involved in any shape or form with this Motor Insurance Guide?0 -
Hi Labman
The answer to your question is also "Yes." It has taken over two years to research and compile the information in order to write the Guide and is full of money saving features on motor insurance, so I am sure it will be of interest to visitors of the Moneysavingexpert website.
