Admin Charges by Car Insurers
PayDay
Having just been charged £15 in admin charges when I informed my new car insurers (The Post Office) that I had changed cars, and having never been charged any admin fee whenever I changed anything at all before by my old insurers (NFU), I wondered if we should get a list of who charges for changes and how much they are and who doesn't?
So far I have:-
Charges
The Post Office - £15.00
Doesn't Charge
The National Farmers Union

Most companies now charge for amendments. I don't disagree with your intentions but it will take a very long time to prepare this list and it won't make much difference to most customers - most people don't intend to change car, address or other details when they take out their policy and they will still buy the cheapest policy even if the company charges (say) £15 for amendments.
If you are going to do this properly, you need to include all admin charges. My close colleague at work is incensed with More Than because they now charge for temporary cover of a courtesy car, whereas they used to offer this free of charge. For people doing a high mileage who use a courtesy car a few times a year, this could seriously make a difference between the relative competitiveness of two insurers.
What companies reserve the right to charge, and what they actually charge, are also not necessarily the same thing.
Anyway, just for the sake of continuing your thread:
Charges
The Post Office - £15.00
More Than - "up to £25.00"
Esure - "whatever it says on your policy schedule"
Doesn't Charge
The National Farmers Union0 -
This is something that annoys me too, I always take this is to consideration when I am taking out a new insurance policy.
I know that Kwik Fit charge up to £25 for admin fee'sIf I have been helpful - Hit the Thanks button0 -
Lloyds TSB/Prudential both serviced by Churchill (therefore possibly Direct Line as well?) charge around £15.

OK, lets go back to the old method where the insurance premiums were more expensive and charges like this were hidden within that.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). I'm concerned to read that The Post Office charge £15 administation fee every time as I recently swapped to them and I know I have to amend my policy at least 4 times. That will be £60 on top of what I have already paid them! I wonder why confused.com doesn't put the administration fees on their sites? Serves me right for not checking the details myself. I think I might cut my losses and change to an insurers that don't charge.
Are there any other insurances companies that don't charge apart from The National Farmers Union?RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

According to a recent survey LV= / NU Direct / Barclays/ Marks & Spencer/ CIS/Insure It All/What Car/Volvo/Ford Sure/RAC
all charge no amendment fee.
AA hold the record for the most excessive at £30.00!0 -
Elephant charged me £15 just over a year ago when I changed cars. I switched to Virgin when that policy finished as they don't charge (I knew I had a house move coming) and they were cheaper than Elephant's renewal anyway.
So that's two more for the list:
Charges
The Post Office - £15.00
More Than - "up to £25.00"
Esure - "whatever it says on your policy schedule"
Kwik Fit charge up to £25 for admin fee's
Elephant = £15
Doesn't Charge
The National Farmers Union
Virgin car insurance
I accept that charges may have been hidden in more expensive policies, but I shopped around extensively and Virgin came out trumps despite no admin charges. I've also just renewed with them because they matched the cheapest quote I found when shopping around for this year, which happened to be £50 below their renewal figure.

Miss Moneypenny - good point re confused.com. Have you e-mailed them with this very helpful suggestion? They might be very pleased to add this as an extra part of their comparison service.0

Good idea. I noticed on the utility comparison sites they star rate service of the providers. Perhaps they could do that too ie Whether the customer service number is a freephone, landline, 0845 or 0870 and how long you have to wait on the line to speak to a person.
Perhaps some of us should set out own comparison site up and do it better than confused.com, so we make the money from it:DRENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.
