I've got a poorly doggy
Little Molly has kennel cough and is wearing herself out retching the phlegm up
I rang the emergency vet about 9pm to ask for advice a there was some blood in it, but she said that all they can do is treat her with antibiotics as it is an upper respiratory infection
She is asleep at the moment, having just had an hour of coughing, etc. She will rest for a half hour or so, then start again, so I am sitting up with them. Bess did sneeze a couple of times yesterday and was 'wheezy' as if she had a cold, but has been fine today. They have both been off their food today though, just ate a little soft food, ignoring their dry food. They have both slept a lot today
So I am ringing the vet first thing in the morning to get Molly an appointment and get her checked and on antibiotics as soon as possible. The vet advised that she would be in for a very uncomfortable couple of days though
Aww, poor Molly. Glad you are taking her to the vets first thing, kennel cough can be nasty.
Check with your vet obviously, but child's benalyin (sp?) cough mix can be given to dogs to relieve the retching. You could also try eucalyptus essential oil in an essential oil evaporater burner to help her breathing.
I would be very wary of letting Molly near any other dogs if you are walking in a local park as kennel cough can lead to pneumonia in elderly dogs.
I really hope Molly feels much better soon. It's so sad when they are poorly.

Thanks for that great advice Mutley. My other dog Bess isn't coughing like Molly but did sneeze and 'wheeze' yesterday, and, like Molly, has been sleeping most of the day, plus off her food and not wanting a walk, which is most unlike her. I say this after your comment about elderly dogs as she is nearly 9 years old
About 14 years ago, our 2 dogs then, Bonnie and Bimbo, got kennel cough together, and it was terrible to watch them but they got through it ok. I can't remember how long it lasted though

Aww, bless. Glad they are both resting now x
Kennel cough can vary widely in dogs from a few days of slight coughing to very nasty respiratory infections. Sounds like poor Molly has a nasty bout of it. I'm sure she will feel much better after some A/Bs from the vet and some rest & tlc. You must be exhausted too. I'm up because one of my dogs got me up to go out and now I can't get back to sleep because of stupid gallbladder nausea. Urghh.
Good luck at the vets,
