Free BT Infinity fibre optic upgrade

Options
I've received a letter today from BT to say I can get a free upgrade, I have phoned and booked the appointment for an engineer to come and do it. The upgrade does not affect my landline or broadband contract in any way and they will still end on the original dates. The only thing I am now wondering is what will happen in January when my contracts are due for renewal whether they will be hiked up as I currently get a really good deal with BT unlimited broadband for £7.49 per month including evening and weekend calls.

  • I have received the same letter today and my immediate thought was "you don't get anything for nothing"! I do not see how BT can go to all the expense of providing a new hub and getting an engineer to fit it all up without us having to pay extra when the contract ends.
Interestingly, a neighbour had a telephone call from BT yesterday offering the same connection but she was asked to pay initially an extra £8 per month and this was then negotiated down to £4 per month.
I am inclined to wait and see what else comes up on this thread and also the BT customers forum.

An Infinity contract must involve a new broadband contract, with a new minimum term. What's the catch when it ends?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I specifically asked if my broadband contract would be renewed as a result of the infinity upgrade and was told it wouldn't be affected.

The latest is after having just phoned and getting through to customer retentions (not sure why) is that they are not aware of the offer i have been given and anyone upgrading to infinity is required to agree to a new 18 month contract at £26 per month, however, the cheapest offer the customer retentions team can do is £22 plus some pence (can't remember exactly). I also did an online chat with an advisor who told me if i was upgrading from BT Total Broadband 3 to BT Infinity option 2 they are the same price, which they are not ! So 3 different people, 3 different answers. The retention team didn't know anything about the free upgrade deal. This gets better and better. So, it looks like the free upgrade deal is a no go even though i have a letter offering it to me.

If you have a letter show them, however you do know its not true fibre
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

Finally got to the bottom of it all. BT have a dedicated department that are offering the free upgrade and I was told that the other BT departments may not be aware of this offer (they weren't).
Had I gone ahead with the free upgrade come January when my contract expires BT would not have been able to offer me the same monthly fee. Also, since I had now placed an order for the upgrade I was not able to recontract as you can't have both orders open at the same time.
So the solution was to cancel the infinity upgrade, phone customer services to recontract for a further 12 months at £13.25 and then phone again once the new contract has gone through and I'll get 12 months of infinity for the standard broadband price (£13.25 is the lowest price the retention team are allowed to offer, not the normal rate). At the end of the 12 months the price will go up as BT won't honour the £13.25 per month for infinity but I do have the option of going back to normal broadband. Hope this helps anyone else.

  • Total rip off!!!
  • They did the sam to me. My mother has been with BT for over 50 years!!! The made a offer of Unlimited Broadband and Free Day, Eve, Weekend calls. BT Infinity Letter phone call and the rest. New line but in etc. All done in Dec, by March 2013. £28 bill turned into £46 bill. Person says that I have to renegotiate new contract. My mother has never had to do this for the past 50 years. I thought that BT was good. They are Sh*T and liars. Anyone dealing with and phone company I urge you all to record them and say to them that you are recording for your training as they record you!

It is so sad that we noe live in a age that you can not trust ANYONE!!
