Pregnant and overweight

My main concern though which of course none of you can answer so I will speak to the Dr/midwife is whether I will be allowed a home birth. My other two children were born in hospital with no complications and no pain relief so fingers crossed this one goes the same way - but at home!
I have a high BMI too, around the same as when i had my DS. With him i had a prefectly healthy pregnancy, no problems at all. I was lighter straight after i gave birth than i was before i fell pregnant! I left hospital in clothes i hadnt worn in years! lol
This time im the same, havent lost as much as im dealing with the sickness a bit better but have lost some. Im planning a home birth too as last time was problem free so cant see any reason as to why not to. My midwife says its fine too.
Have a new consultant at the hospital this time and she wants to re scan me at 36 weeks to check position etc but my midwife (same as last pg) said thats nonsense and she felt for my ds's positions ok so cant see why this time will be any different.
If youre healthy and dont use pregnancy as an excuse to eat what you like then you shouldnt really have any probs. I have a much slimmer friend and she has had problem after problem after problem with both her pregnancies so weight isnt always a factor.Bringing up 2 handsome boys and 1 gorgeous girl the MSE way!Joseph born 19th December 2001Matthew born 8th August 2007Tara born 23rd January 20110 -

No one can stop you having a home birth. You are more at risk for some things, including things you might not have thought of like dvt or something.
Try and use the pregnancy to give you the motivation to eat healthily, of course don't restrict things too much and don't worry much about your weight, but at the same time, the baby will take what it needs before your body takes anything so don't worry too much about stuffing your face. Speak to your midwife about it all. Excerising should be fine if you feel comfortable, just listen to your body.
Good luck! Hope your midwives are good in facilitating the pregnancy you want0 -
im overweight and nearly 9 weeks pregnant and have been having all the same worries as the OP. Its my first pregnancy and i'm just waiting for a doctor or midwife to say "oh you're just too big you shouldnt have gotten pregnant until you lost weight"! The thing is I do eat healthily - little or no processed food at all, the very rare bar of chocolate, and we never get takeaway - mostly fresh meat and veg, potatoes and rice. But I must admit my portions are probably my downfall. Before I got pregnant I had decided to lose weight and was doing so nice and slowly about a pound a week, by doing more exercise mainly. This last couple of weeks though I've been so sick and had absolutely no energy. I've been going for walks when I can but Im just so tired. Also i'm finding it difficult to eat anything sensible, I've gone off meat, and am snacking on toast and cereal - which probably isnt a bad thing. I've had mad cravings for tuna which is a pain because you're only supposed to eat 2 portions a week, its driving me mad - i think i'm starting to dream about it!!
Anyway, I've decided im going to eat as healthy as i can and go for as many walks as i can, and stay generally as active as i can, and hopefully things will go well - touch wood.DON'T WORRY BE HAPPY

Hi
I know that this is cheeky, but can I ask how heavy are you? I think that a moderate amount of extra weight won't affect you at all. I actually found that I lost weight in the first 3 months and if you feed your baby afterwards the weight will drop off - the secret is keeping it off!!!
I think that you can loose weight whilst pregnant if you are quite overweight, so that maybe you end the pregnancy the same weight as you started - but I would recommend that this is done in association with your GP.0 -
i would say im 4 stone overweight.DON'T WORRY BE HAPPY

patchwork cat (cute moggy by the way!) Ask away, with pregnancy you lose all embarrassment!

I'm not just moderately overweight - I'm about 4 stone over (obviously my BMI is in the "not very light catagory!)
But you have all been very reassuring. Thank you!
If you just read all the medical bits on the internet it frightens the life out of you!
Unfortunately slimming world, aqual aerobics etc are out of the question as money is seriously tight, but I plan on upping my exercise levels - walking instead of driving etc. I usually go to the post office abut twice a week by car - I will now walk!
My main downfall was wine so as that has been cut out completly I am optimistic for the future!
I'm not a very confident person so I was worried about what the "professionals" would say to me but I'm a lot happier now.
Thanks all again! :T :T:T:T:T0 -
ts my first pregnancy and i'm just waiting for a doctor or midwife to say "oh you're just too big you shouldnt have gotten pregnant until you lost weight"!
Naaah, us midwives don't say things like that!0 -
I think that possibly aiming on not gaining anything would probably be a good idea, but again I would like to reiterate - go to your GP. I would say don't do it only with a club if you are pregnant even if you could afford it.
Slightly off topic what really gets my goat is that smokers have loads of help from the medical profession to quit, but when I approached my GP all he would do was say come in once a fortnight to see the nurse and here's a diet sheet.
However the reason that I think that you should see your GP when dieting when pregnant is so that he can monitor baby and that you are not anaemic etc.
If you follow a balanced sensible diet with perhaps extra calcium in the form of skimmed milk and lower fat products, eat lots of fruit and veg and lean meat and fish you will be giving your baby the best start in life. Do remember though that not all fat is bad.0 -
Thanks patchwork for the advice.:T:T
I'm not intending to diet now I'm pregnant but I will watch what I eat and exercise more!
What you suggested is petty much what I'd started to eat anyway.
I do draw the line though at skimmed milk. It's yuk!
