Pregnant and overweight

As some may know I have just discovered I'm pregnant - not at all planned

Anyway over the past few months I have been losing weight but being pregnant now I can't really continue this.

So I was wondering if there are any mums out there that can tell me what problems if any they encountered by being overwieght and pregnant.

eat healthily and stay as active as you can and don't worry too much about it. You may well find that you lose weight or stay the same weight despite the growing baby especially if you get bad morning sickness. Your midwife will keep an eye on you if you're very overweight and I believe it can increase your risk of things like gestational diabetes but there are lots of overweight women who have healthy pregnancies and healthy babies so try not to worry too much about it.

    Don't diet, but don't eat for two either.Easier said than done,I know.

i was 14 stone when I was in the same position as you- big surprise to us!!

I ate hardly any healthy food, had bad heartburn, got flared ribs, did no exercise and I can't help looking back and thinking that I just gave up when I was pregnant- if I had have eaten more fresh whole food, and gone out for a walk every day then I might have felt fitter come the end of the 40 weeks.
Yes you can't diet or go to aerobics but you can really look after yourselves.

Be good to yourself and the baby, nourishment and gentle execise is what's needed, your weight cannot be changed now, but you fitness levels can be improved gently.Best wishes to you :D

If you feel you are more overweight than you should be, now that you're pregnant I would talk to your Midwife and GP about it as I'm sure they'll offer you advice. There are concerns about being overweight and pregnant but many professionals don't say anything to Mums as they're frightened of causing offence. Need to think about your own health as well as the baby.

Congratulations, firstly! I was in exactly the same position, a BMI off the top of the chart but had been losing weight slowly when I fell pregnant by accident.

In terms of being overweight, I asked my doctor about it right away and he reassured me that baby will take what it needs and as long as I am eating a varied healthy diet I don't need to worry. So, no calorie counting and no wild exercise plans but if you're doing a little exercise anyway then carry on, and just make extra sure you have 5-7 portions of fruit and veg a day. I'd also advise you bulk-buy some weetabix - a really easy low fat brekkie and trust me, your bowels will thank you! I found my appetite seemed to shrink in the early weeks anyway, although I didn't get morning sickness. Eating small meals and snacks often suited me best.

In terms of the surprise, give yourself time and lots of it. I kept thinking I'd get my head round it in a few days but looking back it took me a few months. It's ok to feel up and down, happy and sad, and don't make the mistake I did of assuming I just wasn't coping - I now realise that hormones were actually to blame for a lot of the emotional messiness and they're not always just an excuse! News like this is always a body-blow, but when it comes at a time when your whole system is in hormonal shock it's really really hard to deal with rationally. So just don't expect too much of yourself, as I say, time will be the only thing that helps much.

In terms of being overweight, so far no problems. I've made a point of continuing life as normal, not faffing around being waited on all the time, and I feel for the most part ok for it. Staying active makes me feel better in general, and it's handy in the early stages when you're still in denial :D

Do go see the doc and get some reassurance and advice - mine was really good and made me feel much better about things. :grouphug:

Thanks to all of you for your replies. They are very reassuring!

I should say at this stage this is my third child, my youngest turned 10 last week so it was even more of a shock!

I do eat fairly healthily - and have cut out alcohol now - all the food we have is home prepared none of the processed rubbish!

I am guilty of loving cheese and crisps (and wine) but will stop eating those and try and eat more fruit.

My main concern though which of course none of you can answer so I will speak to the Dr/midwife is whether I will be allowed a home birth. My other two children were born in hospital with no complications and no pain relief so fingers crossed this one goes the same way - but at home!

I didn't have any prblems being overweight carrying my second child apart from sickness. However when I was a healthy weight with my eldest I had no sickness and loads of energy.

If you are very large I would opt for a hospital birth just incase, if its only a couple of stone have a home birth.

  • Hi

I dont know if this is any help but have you checked out slimming world. If I remeber correctly you can follow there programme even when pregnant with the permission of your midwife because its not calorie restrictive.
