hi i have a good bit of advice for you dont go to cardiff salons, im not saying that there arnt any good ones because there are, the problem is that you paying big ££££ to cover their huge over heads.

find your self a quality small town salon, there are loads with stylist that are better than most in cardiff. just because your paying big ££ does not = quality or value.

there are some very good salons on the out skirts of cariff city some very good ones in cowbridge that ive tried.

i use www morganshairsalon com who are based in caerphilly ive been to most of the salons in cardiff, most dont even come close to the quality of cut you get here or the value. l work in caerphilly hench why use them. but now i have found them i would travel to get to them with out a doubt.

basically my advice is to get out of the big city price joke !!you dont get value.paying a fortune does not guarantee you will have a good cut

(i bet you know some one who has paid over £100 for a hair cut, they were dissapointed with)

thats because when you pay big bucks your expectations are very high, hair dressers (good ones) are the same no matter how much you pay.

finding a good one is the hard bit. paying huge prices does not mean you get a good stylist.

    good luck

I use Sands Hair in Penylan http://www.sands-hairdressing.co.uk/ I pay about £43 to have my hair done and have never, ever had a bad result in almost 10 years of going there. The stylists really listen to what you want and you get a complimentary head massage before they start cutting which is great for relaxing you.

Unfortunately I had a terrible time at Sands. After arriving for my appointment for a semi-permanent colour on a Saturday morning, I was seated and told that my colourist would be with me shortly. After 20 minutes of being ignored (even though there were at least 5 young girls wandering back and forth seemingly doing very little) I finally asked if there was a problem and then someone went to get her (she gave no apology and simply stated that no-one had told her I was there).

Although I'd booked in for a semi-permanent, she tried to talk me out of it and insisted I needed a permanent colour to cover the minimal amount of grey roots (she even called over someone who appeared to be a manager to confirm). I've had Aveda colours in the past, and know full well that they do cover grey, but they kept disagreeing (they were wrong of course, all greys were covered).

The young girl who washed my hair was the roughest hairwasher I have ever experienced (no scalp massage here, only scratches from her nails - and I'm not even kidding), and the colourist then dragged a comb through my wet hair. I have long wavy hair which I take great care to look after - no harsh brushing, no heat styling, no hairdryers - and I expect a hairdresser to at the very least detangle wet hair from the ends.

Finally, although I had only booked a colour, she insisted on drying my hair with a hairdryer and brush (saying it was 'company policy' to dry hair) and tried to insist on using a straightener. The end result cost me over £70 as they then charged me for the blow dry. The worst experience I've ever had in a hairdressers. I'll be going back to one of the Aveda salons in town next time.

Prior to becoming vegan (hence the Aveda salons), I had good experiences at Guy Christian on City Road. They give you a sort of loyalty card thing when you go, and every few visits you get a 'reward' like a free treatment to money off. They also frequently have 'recommend a friend' offers providing more money off. Plus, they don't seem to employ bored looking teens who are more interested in checking their appearances in a mirror every 5 minutes than doing any work.

Johnson's on Cathays Terrace is good, I used to go there in my student days. Walk-in haircut is only £14 (last time I checked, might have gone up) and £28 by appointment. Good little salon, friendly and professional.

Oh and cheap highlights in Figurehead on Monthermer road, but I have had a few dodgy haircuts there, so I would steer clear if you want anything but a trim.

    I'd recommend Neo, 39 Whitchurch Road Cardiff 029 20619636
    http://www.neohairdesign.co.uk/

I have to admit that I've known Nia for years because we worked together before she went back to hairdressing as a stylist at another salon. She and Owen opened Neo over 2 years ago, and even my hairdresser-phobic husband loves to go there because the atmosphere is so friendly and relaxed.

You can feel confident in going there and just asking for a change, or for "anything that will suit me" or for something more specific.

I was going to recommend Neo on Whitchurch Road as well - if for any reason you can't get there, then Ocean on Wellfield Road is pretty good, but Neo is outstanding (they do ordinary cuts and colours as well as the more innovative stuff on the website!).

Tracey does a fab job on my cut (shoulder length to supershort crop or chin length bobs) and Neo is a colour expert!
Learning to live with an IVA - no overdraft - no credit cards - no safety net - very very scary _pale_ All advice gratefully received! :A
  • If it's a deal you're after then this is the place. They do a training morning where their juniors are undersupervision from the man himself. Cuts a free and colours are from £10
Check em out they're all over the internet and can be easily found.

I'd recommend the Cardiff/Vale of Glamorgan College - most of their sites have a hairdressing salon - you can choose which level of trainee you're prepared to trust and it's currently a third of the price I was paying in Saks.....
