    I'd recommend Neo, 39 Whitchurch Road Cardiff 029 20619636
    http://www.neohairdesign.co.uk/

I have to admit that I've known Nia for years because we worked together before she went back to hairdressing as a stylist at another salon. She and Owen opened Neo over 2 years ago, and even my hairdresser-phobic husband loves to go there because the atmosphere is so friendly and relaxed.

You can feel confident in going there and just asking for a change, or for "anything that will suit me" or for something more specific.

Kelly at Zigi's, Newport Road, Rumney. Costs £20-£30. She's really good. Or, a bit more extravagant go to Ken Picton in Cardiff Bay, very good but I've not had my hair cut there so couldn't recommend a stylist, although I've heard many good reports, I just get my hair coloured at the training school (very cheaply).

I must admit I was very disappointed with Ken Picton and wouldn't go back there.......in my view very overpriced simply because of location.

Experiences of salons can vary by stylist, taste and luck but my experiences of 'posh' salons haven't always been good.

I found Saks over-rated - after charging me £50 for a quick and average cut where he acted like he was doing me a favour the stylist stood waiting for a tip (which he didn't get ;) ).

Years ago I tried Vidal Sasoon and paid a lot to be talked down to while being given a cut I said I didn't want. And they cut what they called 'split ends' out of my friend's relaxed hair, leaving her with an Afro back when they weren't fashionable.

I got a good cut and decent service from Essensuals opposite Saks. Coray and Co in City Road also did a really good job.

I now go to the Hair and Beauty Studio in City Road, where they're friendly, quick and good value.

I don't think the cuts were a huge amount better in the pricey places I've been, just nicer surroundings. The worst cuts I've had were at Constantinou's.

There are several salons in Cardiff with Good Salon Guide ratings, including Sands in Penylan, which I used to really like - http://www.goodsalonguide.co.uk/main.asp

Hope that helps you choose, Chez - what do other people think?

Tell us more about the training school - are they often looking for people to practice on? How do we find out? This sounds like reall MSE stuff!

The Ken Picton Training School is in Cardiff Bay, near the multi storey car park. They only do hair on Monday's for the public. Tel: 029 20 662080, you have to ask for a Training School appointment. The charges vary, I pay between £15 and £20 for colour and highlights (I think it depends on how experienced the stylist is). I think a cut is £5. Beware though, they are very very very slow. You need to set aside about 4 hours for colour and cut. But they are very well supervised throughout and they keep good records of each visit. I recommend it for colouring especially. They are also very up to date.

    I hope that's helpful.
