i want to cancel sky and use freesat

hi everyone. i want to cancel my £35.00 a month sky package that includes sky+ in 1 room and 2 multiroom with basic sky boxes. ive tried speaking to sky and have tried speaking to freesat but i am still utterly confused! ive read on these forums that if you simply remove the sky card from the machine, turn off and on again that you will receive the freesat channels? is this correct? as when i have spoken to sky + freesat they claim i have to spend £25 per box to be able to get freesat? also does anyone have freesat? a freesat box? a freesat box with recording facility? your help would be much appreciated!! i am just terrified that i will cancel my sky package and then in a months time we wont be able to get any tv at all!!! lol

    Did you try this?

If this gives you the channels you want, then cancel Sky.

    If it doesn't, then don't.

    Simple!

How can anyone answer that.We don't know your viewing preferences. You need to look to see if the channels you want are on Freesat or Sky.

If you cancel Sky, you won't stop receiving TV channels. Your old card will give you about six 'Freesat from Sky' channels over not using the card which is basically Freesat. Do not buy a £25 Sky card you don't need it. However unless you pay Sky £10.50 per month you will loose the recording facility on the Sky +. So if Freesat is OK for you its overall cheaper to get a Freesat PVR instead.

Take the card out and check which channels you get , if it's enough for you then job done. If you need more or different channels put the card back in and carry on paying.

I cancelled sky a while ago and with the card still in, I get enough channels for my purposes. I found I needed the card in to get the local services, eg Midlands tv instead of London etc.

No idea about recording as I don't bother with that.

  • perhaps i havent made myself clear enough
i am currently using sky at £35.00 a month
    i have 1 sky+ box and 2 multiroom subscriptions
i want to cancel all 3 boxes to stop paying sky and use some sort of free service.
i heard that with freesat you can use your sky dish that you already have installed, i dont believe i can get freeview in my area and understand that this needs a certain type of aerial?
i need help trying to figure out what will happen when i cancel sky.
do i need to buy a freesat card from sky at £25 per box?
when the sky gets turned off will the boxes allow me to watch channels 1 to 5?
If i insert the old sky card in the box will i get any more channels than just 1-5?
if i pay sky the £25 per card for a freesat card so i then get the 200 or so channels that freesat advertise alone?
i already understand that if you want to keep the recording facility you need to pay £10 a month.
would it be better to buy freesat boxes and get rid of the old sky boxes?
any help given in a friendly manner would be much appreciated!!

Personally, if I was so confused, I think I would just buy a freesat box.
    Cheap as chips nowadays.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

If you stop subscribing to Sky your viewing card will become a Freesat from Sky card.
You should not have to pay £25/box for a new cards
You will lose the recording/playback facility on your Sky + box.
If you wish to confirm this simply remove your viewing cards.

PS do not confuse Freesat with Freesat from Sky.

BTW £35/ month seems cheap for 3 boxes are you on a deal? It should be £ 42.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

You may be tied in for a year and unable to easily cancel until that period is up.

Have you removed your sky card from the box yet so you can see what channels you get? It really not confusing at all.
