  • One other option that I've had some success with. Try putting a hand towel on the floor, place cat on towel, wrap the towel around cat then place in carrier. It sound simpler than it is sadly as my former stray boy sometimes wriggles partially out of his towel jail but it does reduce the claws in play as you try and get the !!!!!! in the carrier.

Check out YouTube for various vids that shoe people 'wrapping' their cats.

Let us know how you get on tomorrow OP :) Your plan sounds a good one and I can only imagine how much she still suffers from being locked in at a young age :(

My cat is quite large (we've just upgraded to an xxl litter box), but am sticking with the smaller carrier for now, we find it easier to get her into it (one of us drops her in, carrier on end and head first, and the other is on hand to remove starfish paws and close it, a desperate few seconds I tell you with hearts racing) , of course every cat is different!

Wrapping completely in a towel like a mummy with only head out can work well for difficult cats. The more you can immobilise them the better.

She tolerates the Vets reasonably well, growls away and hisses mind but as long as I do the handling is not too bad. We have a Vet we both prefer and always ask for him. She doesn't always hiss when she has her jabs. One thing she does always do is go back in the carrier easily because she knows she is going home!

Mind you she did go MENTAL when they tried to cut her claws once. Never again  Even though there was this feral beast who I didn't recognise hissing and spitting on the floor, she still didn't flinch when I picked her up which made me feel better. Her back claws get quite long over winter so we just make sure now to let her out on the odd nice day before she goes out properly on a regular basis (spring/summer/early autumn). And lots of games involving her chasing after toys down the hall.

I did enjoy reading a series of articles on positive carrier training in Your Cat magazine, but honestly with the best will in the world and top trainers/experts that just ain't gonna work on my cat :rotfl:

Well the initial 'new best friend' of new carrier seems to have worn off.
on tuesday i was trying to coax her into carrier before the battle began with the lick-e-lix things........................we now seem to have developed some kind of strange phobia of them now (not that i really mind that as god knows what is in them) , anytime i show her one she is now running away as apposed to towards me......................and i think she has sussed what the new 'fun-tent' is for.....little git:o

As soon as i get in from night shift i shall close bedroon door as she usually flops at front door when i come in (and if she gets under the bed i've had it).......new carrier, towel and a throw are ready on top.( i tried to get another appointment for later in the day when someone around to help but no luck).................................so...tomorrow morning (or this morning looking at the time now) i shall be going in for the attack at around 08.47.

Operation ASBO (thats her nick-name) begins:rotfl:
Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.

    :T

Well it seems to be definately about being trapped in a small space as she was much better in the large tent.

I did a combination of things everyone said and the towel round all limbs and head out so she could see seemed to panic her less ( I used to just 'bag' her with a towel thinking she would be calmer not seeing)

Stupid huge tent was a squash to fit in a micra front seat ...but at least it worked.......folk in vets thought I had a mum and litter due to size of carrier ,not just one psycho.

Anyhow , thanks for all the ideas and replies everyone.

She had another lot of injections , hole is empty and so is bowel so it's looking ok so far....................and lucky us ........we get to do it all again on monday morning for another check-up.... :)

The best of it is that I often work with really violent psychiatric patients and don't bat an eyelid with them........yet a tortie can have me in a battle.....lol.

sometimes simplest method works just leave it open on the floor and ignore the cat for a bit ... they say curiosity killed the cat and trust me she/he will walk right in eventually they just cannot help it
