I'd consider how it may affect the doors in the room. No point saving yourself half an hour and a bit of cash not pulling the laminate up if you're then going to have the doors all planed down to allow them to open properly!

I'm no pro but I've put carpet over laminate with no issues whatsoever.

Why on earth anyone would want to rip up good insulation escapes me.

Yes, the door bottoms and the height change from 1 room to the next has to be considered, but just to rip it out for no good reason is a waste of time and money.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

I've ripped up carpet over laminate when moving into a new home and thought it was a complete cowboy job by whoever did it. If any fitter suggested that to me he wouldn't be getting the job.

Its perfectly acceptable. Some even recomment putting insulation down - in the form of boards. Thats not a lot different.

If the finished height isnt an issue, theres nothing wrong with laying over laminate. I dont understand why so many people think its a cowbow job.

FWIW, the extra time oculd be a lot. ripping up the old laminate isnt an issue - but propper gluing and curing of the underlay takes a lot longer - and if the underlying floor is in poor state it could take a few days to sort out - and a lot more cash.

Its a personal decision of course, but its not a cowboy job to lay over laminate.

    Agreed.

To those who have done it,where have you put the gripper or have you glued everything to the (expanding) laminate?

I may be old school, but when it comes to doing things particularly in your house I'm of the do it right or not at all. A botch job lay over laminate just in case the floor below has issues is still a botch job. If the floor has issues, resolve that.

Laying over laminate isnt necessarily a Botch job though - its a mindset - but that doesnt make it wrong because you think it is. it only makes it wrong to you. If there is a genuine, technical reason why its a botch then fine - but ive not seen any indications of there being any such reasons, and it is certainly better insulated that removing the laminate.

As for the gripper - TBH In not really sure. I think it went into (or through) the laminate. Not sure why you think laminate is expanding though. It might to start with but if its fitted edge to edge in the room theres nowhere for it to expand to.

Either way - the carpet we took up was over laminate and had been for 10 years with no isues in the carpet above or mould. Ours has been down over a year - and ditto. no problems with movement, mould or any other problems.

If laminate is fitted edge to edge with no expansion gap it isn't fitted properly.Even if you lay it under skirting you still have an expansion gap.if it has no where to expand it will eventually start moving upwards at the joins.

Far enough - though that expansion gap isnt infinite. Its there for initial expansion (which may take a couple of years). Once its settled it wont expand any more. thats physics that :)

    i take your point though.

Maybe an expert could correct me but I assumed that it would keep expanding and contracting throughout its lifetime depending on the moisture content of the room. That presumably will change with the rooms use and the season.
