Carpets on top of Laminate?

Hi All
We have laminate flooring down and want this replaced with a carpet. The carpet fitters suggested putting the carpet straight on top of this and I am a bit unsure whether this is a sensible decision or not? Any advice would be great thanks!
Cheers

One of the exes did this and found out that it caused horrendous damp and mould. But he always was a bit of a knob, so probably did something else wrong, like sellotape up all the air vents and dry washing indoors or somesuch.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0

I did this a few years ago. I knew the concrete floor was not in good shape and had bought very thick good quality underlay for the laminate, so thought it best to just lay the carpet underlay then carpet over that. I do have problems elsewhere in my house with condensation but this is not related to the living room floor and so far no problems with damp in the lounge.0

Laminate isn't exactly the hardest to take up so I'm not sure why this would be suggested. I guess it would depend on the substrate underneath the laminate - if you have concrete floors and the laminate has absolutely no movement then its not such a bad idea but I've been on laminate with a certain amount of bounce and might not want to put carpet on that.0

Well, the first thing I would do is sack the carpet fitters.
Do they call themselves professionals.
You can easily take the laminate up yourself. You also should be able to sell some of it along with the underlay.
Get it done properly if you dont want problems in the future.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
You can easily get the laminate up in a very short time. It is unlikely to be stuck down.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
Why would anyone put carpet on top of laminate?I'd find different fitters personally!
Take the laminate up,it takes no time at all.Literally minutes!!!
Then get some decent underlay, which is nice and cushioned,so not only is it more comfortable under your feet but your carpet lasts longer. If women are birds and freedom is flight are trapped women Dodos?0 -
oh dear i think i'll need to sack myself in the morning, we've been putting carpets on top of laminate for years and it's NEVER caused a problem on any job we've done or any fitter i know so i'm only advising from MY experience. If you have any doors opening into the room they could need a bit cut off the bottom but in doing this if you decide to replace the carpet and lift the laminate in years to come you'll have a big gap at the bottom of your door.0

We layed carpet over laminate (in fact replaced carpet that had already been layed over laminate). Same issue really - we discussed the pros and cons with the fitter. Basically he could have removed the laminate however, twe had no clue on the state of the underlying concrete - and if it was in poor state would need sorting first which could get expensive and would take time (as would properly bonding the underlay). It didnt help we had furniture arriving the following day so really needed the carpet down, however we left the laminate down - and have had no issues at all.0

Oh - we still had decent underlay between the laminate and carpet - you never put the carpet directly down on any hard floor.0

Oh - one pro of laying on top is you have another layer of insulation.0
