Slow Cooker - The Recipe Collection

Hi undercoverangel,
I think your idea of chuck it in and see how it tastes it the best way to go with slow cookers. What you have planned sounds delicious.

Hi scooberdoo,
I think from your posts you are planning to use a readymade sauce in your slow cooker. I haven't tried that but I would think you shouldn't water it down as the slow cooker creates more juices than cooking in the oven would. The meat doesn't need to be covered by the liquid.
The cooking time will depend on the cut, type and weight of the meat...if you could let us know what it is you are cooking I'm sure someone will be along with some good advice.

I went ahead and made the chicken thing for tea and thought I'd let you know it was fairly tasty. I didn't put onion in just leek, courgette, mushrooms and carrots. Was a bit disappointed as the carrots were a little hard and it had been in for well over 6 hours on medium but never mind, the rest of it was yummy!:love:11th March 2010- Got engaged to my amazing fiance, planning our wedding for 20120

Still waiting for our slow cooker to arrive.. but reading this with interest.
There seem to be a lot of people ending up with hard veg.??
How can carrots still be hard after 6 hours??.
Is there a way to cure this ? (I dont like hard veg)
Looking forwards to trying all these yummy things out..“Careful. We don't want to learn from this.”0 -

I haven't had hard veg except where they were on the top and not fully covered with liquid - I think the tips in the book are to put root veg that takes longer to cook at the bottom of the slow cooker, chop them into approx inch size pieces and if you want it to cook a little quicker, then add hot liquid to the slow cooker - eg hot stock or boiling water instead of cold.working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -

My MIL suggests boiling the veg for a few minutes before putting them in your slow cooker - just to give them a head start. I haven't tried it yet but, it certainly makes sense. So far, I've only used very small cut veg so haven't had this problem.Official DFW Member 716 - Proud to be dealing with my debts0 -
Hi there, thanks for taking up the last 3 nights of my time reading through all 57 pages lol.
I'm kinda a complete newbie when it comes to making meals from scratch as I usually use jars of sauce, packet mixes etc but as I have an 8 month old daughter who is starting to eat what we eat, this isn't too good for her due to salt content etc.
I'm looking for help on making things like stock and tomato based sauces (for spag bol etc) to use in SC that she can have too. Any help is much appreciated0 -

Hiya
I never have hard veg. For most recipes, I put the slow cooker on high for the first hour to get it going then turn it down to medium or low depending on what I am cooking.
If the veg is covered with liquid you are unlikely to get hard veg. I have cooked a sausage casserole where the potatoes aren't even nearly covered with liquid and they haven't come out hard (this recipe is cooked for four hours on high).

Vegetables in a slow cooker need to be submerged in the liquid.
The meat does not.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -
I usually make sure that everything is covered in liquid
Cutting the veg a little smaller helps to make sure they are cooked through.
I usually just cook on high tooThen turn it to Auto when its done :rotfl:
I suppose i should invest in a slow cooker cookbook though. The one i bought was only a £9.99 Argos one and it didnt really have many receipes with it from what i can remember. It was 3 years agofurrypig says:my name is Choccy and I am addicted to nose free stamps as I want to save them all and give them noses!!!:rotfl:
About me. Im Choccy or Chocolate orange depending on where i am.Yes occasionally i am a total looon who spends too long online, but no where near as much £ as her spendy elves do ..:D0
