I agree with you that this behaviour is "extreme".
However, I also agree that courtesy is the best option in dealing with the situation.
If this guy is resorting to such ridiculous techniques then either business is very poor or he's simply not suited to life as a salesman.

Just say "No thanks" and walk on...
