Sky sales tactic

I was just approached by a Sky Salesman on the road. I was just minding my own business, walking the dog and listening to some 80's music on my ipod!:j
Then a salesman from sky asked where a certain road was, I told him ( bearing in mind, he was not driving a sky van/ signposted vehicle, but he did have a Sky jacket on) It baffles me that he was selling me services like Sky but did not have a sat nav in his vehicle, especially in this day and age!
He asked if I had Sky and being as honest as I am, I said no, then he parked up. He then started reeling off prices to me.
I told him I pay £25.00 per month for my unlimited broadband with Virgin Media, he said he could do it alot cheaper for me. Him stopping me could have been a very clever sales tactic.
He then asked if I have ever had Sky before, I said "No" he then said, "I will help you out if you help me out.... if you tell me you had Sky before, I will do free installation for you!" That is what really put me off!
I did contemplate getting extra services, with my own provider, but it would mean me having to have a landline put in, something I do not want because I do not want incessant sales calls and nuisance calls that companies tend to find people on a 'magic list'
I just cannot believe I was pitched to when I was walking my dog, also, the dog kept whimpering and whining because he wanted to carry on walking! I wanted to carry on walking too! But I did not want to be rude and just walk off!
I then asked "Have you got any paperwork I can take away and have a read of?" I thought he would have said something like "You have to sign up now because it is for a limited time only" Luckily, he did not continue the hard sell and gave me his details and a form.
Have you had any hard sell approaches like that?

No I havent. They have a stall in the local shopping centre and dont even bother me as i walk past. But I am guessing this is more down to teh individual rather than the company per se. If I were a salesman for any company I woul not be able to do what you describe above.

There it is, right there. Big mistake. It's a British thing.0 -
These are not Sky employees, they are simply independent sales reps on commission. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
-
I'd be complaining to Sky.0

Strange they never admit their BB crawls by comparison, requiring a BT line and naff ADSL too. Of course, they don't care a sale is a sale.0

Yep,I went for an interview a few years ago for one. They get paid 100% commision,so it's in their interest to get sales, they also have little or no idea about the product they're selling...The ones that are in the shopping centers are Sky employees tho.0 -

a 100% of what?? your bill each month? your house?
I love people who waffle on about things they know nothing about0 -

I also think it's a little unfair of you to accuse that poster of "knowing nothing" when he says in his post that he went for an interview for a post as one of these salesmen.
However, I'm sure Spike can fight his own internet battles!:p0 -

Get off your high horse you sanctimonious prat!Try reading my post again,to make it clear for you,I'll expand on my post for your pomposity.
I was interviewed for a post with a company called Topaz Marketing in Belfast about two years ago, they do door to door selling for Sky.
Their agents work on a 100% commission based salary at a rate of (at the time) £45 per sale & you are also self employed, responsible for paying your own tax,NI & the like.
So therefore no sale,no wage.
I also went out into the sales area with them for a day,the bloke I went out with had little knowledge about the products he was selling apart from his literature & he lied point blank to the customers he met.
I was offered the job but turned it down as it wasn't financially viable for me.
Got it now.0
