Daughters and other halves and DGC are coming to me this Christmas and it has been agreed that we are all putting in £20 for the day, so we are sitting down and writing a list and then going shopping, but there wont be tins of chocs, tins of biscuits, spirits, Christmas pudding or nuts in their shells, that has been agreed on so far!!! Its going to be more frugal and less waste sort of day for us!!!!
Jxx£1 a day 2025: £90.00/365 Xmas fund0 -
And adding to my list ... I will not be the person in front of you at the checkout on Christmas eve with a trolley load of bread !0

I like christmas tree chocolates!!
We are going away on holiday on Boxing Day (saved for throughout the year) so I'm not buying much at all. I wasn't going to make a cake, but I probably will as I usually put a small one in Dads Hamper. I will make a square one and cut it in half. No christmas pud this year, I'm making sticky toffee as we all like that.
I think we will just have gammon on christmas day, freezing the leftovers. I bought smoked salmon as a starter when it was on offer a few months ago and froze it
I will buy a small box of Th0rntons continentals and a small box of something the kids like. We always have wine in so I won't buy any specially.
I collect Christmas tree decorations as holiday souvenirs throughout the year so never buy any at christmas - unless i find one in the German market.
I told DD that I am reluctant to buy her "stuff" as her room is so cluttered. I may get her various tickets to shows she likes.
I just want a bottle of SPF30 and a sun hat :jI wanna be in the room where it happens0 -
We will not be buying presents for any relatives or friends this year, just for ourselves. This may sound mean, but a couple of relations give us gift vouchers and then expect the same in return - how about if we do not bother, as we cannot afford it? Then we have one realtion who actually makes nasty comments about presents, but only after a period of time has elapsed - the flowers wilted, the item stopped working. So I said earlier this year that we did not want presents from anyone, we are all adults, and seeing the people at Christmas, socialising over food and drinks and exchanging cards was quite enough.
I also get turned off when present buying becomes competitive, and people start to mention how much they paid for a present, usually in front of the recipient and others. They then go on to say in a loud voice - "but money doesn't matter, it is the thought which counts".
My "moody" relation used to deliberately leave the price tags on presents:eek:0 -
Now that you've had lots of input from the Old Stylers I've moved this thread over to our Christmas board where you should get many more replies.

I will not be buying:
cards (bought enough for the next three years in the sale in January)
crackers (still have loads from last year to keep us going till 2016 at least)
wrapping paper because I already had loads (although I will need a January sales topup)
decorations because we have enough
novelty hats/earrings/jewellery
gingerbread house kit because it was a disaster
Christmas pudding or cake because none of us eat it
mince pies because I'll make my own
turkey because we're having beef
chocolates because we don't need them
cheeseboard
booze of any kind
I will be buying:
the things that are on my meal plan
nothing that I see and think, Ooh I am sure we would like that!
absolutely no last minute panic itemsOrganised Birthdays and Christmas: Spend So Far: £193.75; Saved from RRP £963.76
Three gifts left to buy0 -
Tin of sweets - another family here who hate teh creams and all that happens is I end up eating them post New Year, even though I don't like them
Pickled walnuts - used to get them for my great Uncle who would have one or two and we were left with a jar. Sadly he's now passed away and we do miss him, but not the walnuts
Piccalilli - my Mum insists we have it every year for Boxing day with our cold cuts of meat and no-one eats it - ever!0 -
I dont buy christmas cake or pudding as none of us like it and I also dont buy too many 'goodies' (or try not to!) as we are rarely actually here over christmas (eat at mums) and I seem to lose my appetite due to excitement!! (very rare for me. :rotfl:)'They only had one cow!'0

Something I do buy, every year, at Christmas and no other time: one bottle of cheap, sweet, dark, sticky sherry, which usually I'm the only one who drinks. To me it is utterly Christmassy and I have a single glass most days (OK maybe two on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day) as long as it lasts, which is usually just nicely around New Year. Perfect with Christmas cake or 'mice' pies.:DLife is mainly froth and bubble
