  • I thought it was just me heading for the scrooge title this year. I usually make and bake all my own things but not this year. I've not bought anything especially for xmas this year apart from a single xmas pud for hubby and a pot of cream. We have a regular size chicken and piece of pork in the freezer along with some sausage meat and sausage still left from routine buying earlier in the year. the xmas cake is a recycled cake (M&S ivy bar) from a family funeral that wasn't touched. Veggies are going to be just basic and the nuts have been in the freezer all year from those post xmas sales. We haven't eaten them all year so any left over this tiem will be used in baking. I bought multi pack of crisps when on offer a few months back, ok they are dated 10th Dec but will still be ok. the booze has been sitting there for years so will prob be there in another 5 years so more savings there. I used to make sure I had all the mixers and juices for all the in case visitors. I have bought nothing extra this year. The kids will buy dad some beer so that is sorted. Sweets were bought in multi packs when only £1, so I can make the sweet tree/bouquet instead of forking our £20 for 16 bars. Still got the wrappers and packaging from last years gift. I always have cooked meats in the freezer and we always have cheese and along with the usual general groceries that we always have in such as cereals, eggs and bread I am sure we will not starve on Boxing day either. It is going to make a nice change not to have to run myself ragged buying and storing all those things that we don't really need for Christmas and have to eat up before the 1st Jan diet starts again. Looking forward to a bit of space in freezer and cupboards money still in purse and not feeling like the stuffed turkey myself.

For many years I haven't bought chocolate decorations for the tree. It became a ritual for us to buy fun size packs of smarties and wrap them as individual presents in old wrapping paper and ribbon or odd bits of foil to make special treats to decorate the tree with. All the better because everyone liked smarties where some of the chocolate that is sold tastes awful. Even that will have stopped this year though as my children are all grown up and prefer to choose their own chocolate.
No sprouts as no one likes them, fewer biscuits as restricted diets mean more careful choice, and both DDs are vegetarian so more vegetables than meat. And I am not buying a gammon joint either as everyone is busy on Boxing Day (football fans and entertainment industry workers) when I used to serve up gammon, so it will just be me to feast on turkey sandwiches.:T[/QUOTE

My mam does the smarties on the tree thing.!
  • Not buying anything Christmas related at all. Zilch, nada, naff all.

Only hubby, me and our little kitty and we have all we need so no prezzies, I bake anyway so no change there. Both diabetics so no nasty sugar and cream laden puds  same for chocs and sweeties.

Don't see the point in decorating just for the two of us. If we had kids maybe would be different.

I acknowledge the religious aspect of Christmas but I am not getting myself into debts for it.

Just been out to post 2 Christmas cards, hoping that they will get there by Monday. (I got cards from people I don't usually send to). I put first class stamps on them. They are all in the local area. Do you think they be delivered on time?

We'll be going out to do our christmas shop in about 4 hours. Our usual shop is around £60, this week it will probably be £70, I don't buy anything at all that I don't think I'll use - how on earth people get through the trolley loads of food that they push through the checkout I really don't know! I won't be buying crackers - if we want crackers this years I'll get out the ones that have been in my wardrobe for 4 years!
  • Great advice on here. I am not surprised all the major supermarkets are doing badly :D:D:D:D:D! We have become more savvy!

  • Christmas Cards is the big one for me. It got to the point that I was writing out hundreds of the things, and spending an obscene amount of money in the process. For the pas few years, I have bought a handful (close, immediate family) and made a donation to charity instead - at least that way the money is going to help others less fortunate. :)
  • Nuts and sherry, what is the point? Ooo and stollen, we don't like it that much and always buy one _ barmy !!!!

  • I am NOT buying a lot of our usual Christmas treats this year, and by doing so I have cut my Christmas budget in half!

This includes tins of choc (we have one which I was given from work), scratch cards for Christmas table, Christmas cake, nibbles such as nuts, pretzels, cheese balls etc, and a turkey. We are having lamb & gammon instead, at half of what a turkey usually costs me!

So far nobody has complained, kids are pigging out on satsumas or crackers & cheese instead of chocolates, cakes and crisps, and dh is super impressed with the new TV we managed to get with the money I saved this year!.. Well, we have had the old one 15 years!
It's not about getting what you want, It's about wanting what you get.
