This year we are skipping the Turkey, choosing instead Beef for Christmas Dinner and Lamb for New Year.

  • Turkey, undecided what we will have instead though, there is only the two of us this year and even the thought of a turkey crown is more than we can bear!

I wont be buying Christmas cake, pudding or chocolate Yule log. No nuts in shells, Christmas crackers or tins of sweets (we still had some Quality Street left in the summer) These were all the things that my Mum used to think Christmas wasn't Christmas without.

Anything - not botherring with it this year.
Quality Street. Does anyone like the toffees?!

The dog loves them! The toffee pennies keep him busy for hours.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

  • Some very interesting replies . I can add the following to my list .Christmas cards . I hate getting them and only send out a few . I still have some from years ago . No one will remember if they had the same one last year .
Wrapping paper . Have some in the loft , I only buy a few presents for my youngest son . He has special needs and does not understand Christmas and gets upset by presents .
Christmas cheese . Where do they come up with the flavours
This is more like a what do I buy :)

Will not be buying a lot of the traditional Christmas items.

Mr Muppet and I will definitely be doing a re-run of last year, when we had a Wartime/1940s Christmas Day.

Friends came to join us and loved it!

Wartime food (mock goose (has never seen meat or fowl of any sort) with all trimmings and wartime christmas pud made with mashed potato and grated carrot), Mr Muppets HM beer, 1940s clothes, 1940s music on the ipod (not very 1940s i know but hidden in an old Tannoy speaker), 1940s games to play, the old windup gramaphone playing a few 78s, very simple (useful) pressies wrapped in recycled paper and string, homemade crackers( pull and shout BANG).

Such a lovely day and a fraction spent compared with usual Christmases.

Finished day by slipping into PJs and curling up in front of fire with a mug of cocoa. Bliss! Can't wait!

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow :-)
Thank you for this site :jNow OH and I are both retired, MSE is a Godsend

I never buy dates as I only ever bought them for my late OH as he loved them but I can't even stand the smell of them ,always reminds me of Syrup of figs and getting dosed up by my Mum when I was a little girl :):)
I make my own mince pies and sausage rolls and usually have to make two large tins of them for both my DDs I flit between the pair of them at Christmas and New Year so from around 5.30. on Christmas Eve until the day after New year I am never at home anyway. But I do buy them both either a roll of beef or a turkey crown plus whatever goodies I see that I think they might like I never buy tins of chocolates as I always end up with the ones the rest of the family don't like in a poly bag at the bottom of my fridge They last me through till around February :) I stll have a box of cheese crackers in the cupboard unopened since last Christmas :):) I also normally end up with their left over pickles etc as they know better than to throw food out with me around.I also like to try to run my freezer down a bit before Christmas and stock up just after when the supermarkets reduce all their Christmas stuff.I always buy best quality mincemeat in January as its usually going for about 20p a jarI have some for this Christmas that I bought in January of this year which is really super expensive stuff that was being knocked out at 20 p a jar and I have three jars for this years mince pies :):)The best Christmas pud is the Harrods ones in the sales at the beginning of January they are really super and a fraction of the price. They keep for several years as they are all long dated anyway.A dollop of spirits moistens them after cooking and livens them up a treat.I can't abide some of the tat that shops decide we must have I have never ever bought an advent calender as I think they are a total waste of cash I would rather have a large bar of C*dbury$ chocolate instead far better value and tastes nicer as well.

Not going to buy a tin of roses especially now I know they have palm oil in.
No mince pies, I'm the only one who likes them but last year I didn't eat them and we threw them away in July!!!!!!
No live Xmas tree, bought an expensive potted one last year in the hope we could keep it and use again this year...... now dead on patio.
No novelty gifts that might be a laugh, I only end up donating them to CS later in year.
Can't think of anything else at the moment but no doubt will later.Great thread:T

I haven't caught up entirely yet (I will)
I am not buying tinned biscuits as last year we ended up being given 2 big tins plus had the one we brought.
I am not buying or making Christmas cake/Mince Pies or Apple Pies/gammon instead have asked my Mum to put them in our Christmas Hamper which is great as she has said yes (much better cook than me) she loves doing this kind of thing so is only happy to do it and saves us some pennies too. They will get eaten.
I wont be buying bucks fizz because only i drink it and ill hopefully be b/feeding baby so wont be able to indulge :( lol
sprouts because only i eat them.
Im also not buying christmas cards, im using all the odd leftover christmas cards this year the same goes for wrapping paper.
Oh an also I said on another thread that we take a few crackers out of a box each year that has lasted us 3 so far (well, inc this one coming) and probably will get 2 more years from it, I don't want to pull them and waste them all in one go but don't want to go without them either.
We never buy a Christmas pudding or brandy butter or any spirits or nuts either as we hardly drink anyway, hate christmas pud and hubby is allergic to nuts!
I refuse to buy pringles this year they are a huge unnecessary expense.
I wont buy sprouts as we both hate them.
Everything is always better after a cup of tea
