Basically, offered me an internship that leads to job, dependent on internship performance. Internship is 12 weeks, you get given project to do. Job would be fast-tracked, instead of going through graduate programme etc, would go straight to full developer job (and pay) instead of through intermediary hoops.
Can't get the worst case scenario out of my head, you know what I'm like and how long I hovered over freaking S&S ISA, you know my attitude to risk.

    Company A: safe, locked in.
Company B: superior in every way.... assuming I get job.

That's a doozie, you appear to be fending job offers off with a stick :)

Nice problem to have, sensible discussions with OH will show you the way.

Follow the money I mean follow your heart - which job do you want?

Bearing in mind your worst case scenario mentality, how will you feel if you stick to Company A and it goes bust/sells your soul to the devil/gets landed on by alien spaceship/you get eaten by a zombie werebat as you get in the car in their car park one night etc?

    Hope that helps :D.

  • You may naturally be risk averse but what you need to be is open to taking risk in a more controlled manner. Look at your preference and consider how you could manage the associated risks. I'd say both options have a probationary period the internship one is quite short. Why not stick the risks up here, we'll have a go with suggested mitigations and you can maybe make a more informed choice that takes account of your obvious capabilities.

It strikes me that Cal is perhaps wrongly categorising her risks as catastrophic risks (i.e. ones that cannot be recovered from). If you have had a chance at 2 jobs since graduating in such a short time frame there *will* be others.
      • Best scenario = sweet job with good pay that you really enjoy
      • Middle scenario = ok job that takes a bit longer to get into, a few nagging doubts
      • Worst scenario = no job

      Am I nearly there?

Part of the concern will be due to the binary nature of them (i.e. get job x/do not get job x), hard to mitigate against yes/no options. Perhaps they need to be re-framed for positivity.

We took part on a useful exercise on a Lean Six Sigma course at work recently 'The 5 Whys'. Basically you name something that doesn't work (or in this case, something you're worried about) and drill down asking yourself 'why' at each level. For example, you might start with 'I'm afraid to start with job y', ask yourself 'why?' and come up with 'because I'm afraid I might not get a permanent role' and so on. It's a powerful tool for root cause analysis/getting through the fog that besets our brains from time to time :)

I find garlicky brains on an umbrella helps against those :rotfl:
    • Cal, I believe that you should go for the one that excites you. This is the time when you can afford to take chances.
