Is 1.2MB/sec between hard drives slow transfer?

I'm sorting stuff out on my PC after formatting the discs & right now i'm transferring a stack of files/folders between hard drives & it's shifting slow as anything. Had a look at the rate & it's fluctuating between 1.2-1.4MB/sec.

I have about 50GB to transfer & it was reading off at taking 11 hours!!!!!!

I think I'd be unimpressed with these speeds when copying to a USB Flash Drive! There's something seriously wrong with your system.

USB flash drive? I'm not copying to a USB flash drive. I'm copying from a 1TB HDD to a 500GB HDD.

The system has just freshly been formatted, so shouldn't really have any spyware etc on it. I've not been on any 'suspect' websites.

I think JG was suggesting he would be unimpressed if it was going to USB, that's also why I askedt if via Wifi which would be 1.2-1.4. I would suggest that perhaps you are copying lots of small files hence the slow speed, but of course there may be other unknowns within your system e.g. Antivirus scanning each file before copying , but that's just a presumption.

Yes, it's one parent folder with about 7 sub folders which also have their own subfolders & many thousands of files throughout.

With this - would the 1.2-1.4 be normal then? Just seemed a bit slow to me, but then i'm kinda impatient.

For a single file its terrible, for comparison I can download from the internet x4 faster then your drive to drive.

for multiple files it can vary unfortunately, esp if you're looking at thousands of files.
Plus the file copy in explorer is not really that good.

If your comfortable with the command prompt I would use robocopy instead.

Unfortunately i'm not. Don't know what i'm doing tbh, so i'll save the switch for the weekend. Thanks for the help.
  • Might be worth you benchmarking the read and write speeds of both disks to see if you can pin down the problem. Try HDTune, CrystalDisk Info, ATTO or similar. Are both set to AHCI?

What's the advantage/disadvantage/relevance (delete as appropriate) of AHCI?

(Yes, I can read a Wiki, but a "layman's" explanation may help). :)
