echeque not cleared

Hi all

echeque was paid on the 2nd of april, expected clearence date 13th april

it still has not cleared

my auction states all payment so to be receieved within 7 days, he did infact pay me within 7 days, but still it has not cleared 14 days later, so in theory he has not exactly paid me within 7 days

i have emailed him explaining the above and that i will have to resell the items if payment hasn't cleared by monday, i think that is only fair

if the payment does not clear by monday, what steps do i take?

any advice

thanks

  • Hi techmob

I received an echeque payment on 6th April, still not cleared. The email from Paypal said "This eCheque payment will remain 'Uncleared' until the funds have cleared from the sender's account, which usually takes four working days. If you are sending an item, please do not ship your item until the funds have cleared into your PayPal account. You will be notified by email when the funds have cleared into your PayPal balance."

When I log into Paypal it says payment should clear by 19th April - this ties up with your dates from 2nd to 13th - not sure what has happened to the 4 working days!!! Paypal must like sitting on everyone's money for as long as they can.

I contacted my buyer as soon as I spotted that it was an uncleared echeque payment and she did not know why the payment had been made by echeque - apparently it is the 2nd time it has happened to her. She is patiently waiting for it to clear and I'm hoping not to get a negative for slow dispatch - not really her fault or mine.

Have you been in touch with your buyer before you told them you might have to resell? Did they know that you are waiting for clearance before you can send the item? Or have they been expecting a delivery any day?

Seems a bit harsh to resell if they have not sent an echeque intentionally.

I was paid by e-cheque once. It did not clear for a couple of days after it was supposed to. However, it is the fault of Paypal, who sit on the money and not the buyer. It may be worse due to the Easter bank holidays.

Give your buyer an easter present and let him have a few more days!

    Hi,

i contacted them as soon as the payment was received and told them i would send the item once payment has cleared

as you know it still has not cleared so i have contacted them.

it's not really fair on me, waiting for a payment is it, it works both ways i feel

they didn't reply to my first email, and i am sure it is only an echeque when they are not verified, is that correct , or is it that they pay by paypal with no funds and it comes from the bank?

p.s i hate echeques aswell, maybe i should set ebay and paypal to refuse echeques, is this possible

thanks for the replies guys, i will wait and see what happens on monday

I know it is a pain. I was not happy about my e-cheque, but it is the only time it has happened in over 75 sales. I would state on your auctions that you do not accept e-cheques. The only problem is, I dont think you can refund an uncleared e-cheque. Maybe some of the experts will appear soon to help. I bet they are all out sunning themselves!

You can't refund the echeque until it clears so refusing to sell once it clears is going to leave you open to a non selling seller complaint.

Paypal seem to go through phases with these echeques, you can send dozens of payments then suddenly one will go as an echeque, and there is nothing you can do about it. However, as a seller waiting for it to clear and then refunding it is really not in the spirit of things, you will lose your FVFs, you won't get a relist credit and you'll have a very unhappy buyer eligible to leave you feedback..and you still have to resell it. Why not wait until it clears then just send the item, at least you know you have a secure cleared payment!

Trouble is that I don't think you can block echeques and my buyer didn't know her payment was going to turn into an echeque - she still doesn't know why it happened.

I've just had a look on Paypal and it looks like you can initiate a refund, my item only amounts to £10 so I'm happy to wait until it clears or she has had enough waiting and requests a refund.

It's a bit different if it is for a larger amount - the only plus side to this is that Paypal don't take any fees for an echeque.

Yes they do :( they just don't show until the echeque clears into your account then you'll see the usual net amount added to your balance.

They show it gross whilst it is uncleared as not even paypal will show fees being taken from a payment they haven't paid you!

I take your point about the fairness - you're waiting for payment and the buyer is waiting for the item - only Paypal isn't waiting.

I was fortunate that my buyer replied to my first email and we are now in contact.

I don't think the verification of the buyer has any bearing on this, my buyer is verified and has a confirmed address.

  • Still waiting for one to clear from the 3rd and one from 2nd Apr which the buyer mailed me about yesterday saying it had just been taken from their account. So now?? Floating around in the ether I think because I haven't received it yet...
