roxie- I don't know what your initial post was about since you've delted it but have grabbed a bit of a gist with the following comments. if you go on the special occassions board there's a thread there where people post their budgets. They range from 0 (and the poster has won the huge majority of gifts- I was so intrigued I asked:D) to £1000s. Perhaps having a read thru will help clarify whatever your problem was.

btw - nice to see you back on the boards, haven't come across you in ages.

In some ways, commercialism is to blame for this. Some parents feel actual GUILT if they haven't spent hundreds on toys and have a mountain of stuff for their children at xmas. Yes the christmas adverts look lovely, but that is what they are designed for, to make us suckers buy in to the ''idea of christmas''. I mean, how many of us are actually religious?

We can have a carol singing, chestnuts roasting round a fire type of christmas (if you are into that kind of thing) without spending fortunes.

Me, I'm not religious, so don't heavily celebrate it, it'd seem a bit contradictory to not believe in god, or go to church, then spend fortunes celebrating the birth of christ.

I'm not religious either. It was a pagan festival to brighten the middle of winter before the Christians came along and hijacked the event.

A Merry Winter Festival to be enjoyed from December 24th (ish) until January 2nd (ish).

I understand that may be the case, but if any hijacking was done, it was many years back, so not really relevant to what we, or our children were/are taught at school and the images that we are presented with regarding christmas these days. At school they are taught the nativity version so could get a bit confusing for them

I am frequently shocked at the amount some parents spend on children at Christmas. If they can afford it withoug resorting to credit cards or going into debt then surely its up to them but you don't need to spoil them to make it a good time

Hopefully, over time, the idea of gods and religions will fade away as scientific knowledge proves them to be unsound beliefs. Then we can hijack the Winter Festival back. Schools should stick to teaching facts. Scientific knowledge is based on evidence not beliefs.

  • OP is so boastful regarding her wealth, perhaps she should put some of it towards English lessons. To stop any further"arguements", obviously.

I love to spoil my daughter at xmas...... She was always great a school, a lovely child and she deserves to be spoiled on two days a year (b'day and xmas) This is her last year of over the top lavishness as she'll be 21 soon.

To me its about being able to afford it, I wouldnt go into debt but I do love to choose personal gifts, do the wrapping etc and see the face when the gift is opened.

  • Looking at people who spend large amounts at Christmas I sometimes wonder how the grandparents, uncles, aunts and other family members feel. What do you give if everything the child wants is bought by the parents anyway. I wonder how the children react to more simple and less costly presents.
