I moved from Essex 18 years ago to the valleys (8 miles from Merthyr) - best thing I ever did.
Now got great job, great girl, and great quality of life (no mortgage, cheap beer, etc).
Merthyr is like a lot of valley towns, some good bits, some not so good. My friends live in Bristol and I like it there, but they live in a nice bit!
As a suggestion, rather than chuck it all in & move, why not rent for a few months to see if you get on with the natives (& they with you)?
I've found if you treat others as you want to be treated it tends to be reciprocated. I've never had any trouble - you can get the odd comment but it tends to be from the sort of people whose company you wouldn't want anyway, and that could happen anywhere for any reason.
The only exception is England v Wales Rugby weekend - all bets are off then but 99.99% is good banter and in good spirit and one of the best things about living here.

Low land price, cheap construction, paper thin dolls houses.
Call the estate something like Honeysuckle Mews and sell them to people who normally wouldnt give Merthyr a second look.
It still does not make it a desirable area. You cannot polish a turd.0 -
Old, traditionally built terrace (or non terrace) houses are IMHO far better built than some of the timber framed rubbish they throw up nowadays.
Just because a house is new & shiny doesn't make it well built. Some of the older houses have stood for generations and should be fine for a few more.0 -
I posted on another board, on one of the other sites I visit. They weren't really worth talking to as there was no advice, just comments about sheep & wellies. I'll stick to MSE I think.
