Never buy a van or big estate! If you do, your list if friends will expand, all your friends will want you to help them move, pick up, carry and deliver heavy stuff for them all around the uk for the cost of a beer.

haha this is so true. I've had Volvo estates for years! Helped many a "friend" move house, car parts, etc.

I quite fancy a rover 75 some cheap ones going on autotrader

Nowt wrong with the 75 - superb value for money imo, either go diesel or for the 2.5 petrol only - not 1.8 or 2.0 v6. In fact I think there is a v8 version, but might be just for MG

What about this one? What would the running costs be? I realise the consumption would not be great. What about servicing etc?

Slome great experiences there jim thanks. Seems to me that u need to be good with cars to keep a banger going cheap. I am hopeless with cars so would have to rely on mechanics

Everybody has to start somewhere- usually the beginning, get a haynes manual, you will also find a wealth of experience knowledge and help on this forum as well. Go for it!

This looks a good deal http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201243490092682. Are these reliable and as cheap to get parts for?

I open to being contradicted here but I believe the rover 1.4 engine is a very well thought of, reliable honda design.

Looks okay as it goes, personally I'd rather not buy from a dealer. I'd be looking at something honest but well maintained, not immaculately clean from a genuine private seller (for a couple of hundred less.)

A few minor dents and scratches give you some haggle room, and if your kids are anything like mine they'll soon be opening the doors into walls and riding bikes, skates and scooters into the poor car.

edit: parts are easy for most common cars (although they might not be OEM) - check eurocarparts with car spec or number plate for example (if buying there don't forget cashback!) I agree with worried jim re doing diy work - it doesn't take much practice. Most jobs can be done easily by watching a couple of youtube vids before starting (I haven't even bought a haynes for my last 2 cars - although they are great when starting out with diy maintenance.)

No! No! No!- Don not go any where near anything with a Rover K series engine. Ever.

We are trying to guide you to something reliable with low maintenance and you go and find the most unreliable engine ever made. Take a cold shower and start again.

Nothing could be further from the truth! The reason it was so (big pile of poo) is that Honda had nothing to do with it. Consider your self contradicted.
