Cost of Asda vs Lidl ?

Lidl fruit and veg I didn't really think was as good quality, it didn't seem to last as long as fruit/veg I bought from Asda.
I think Lidl fruit and veg is actually very good. In the past I would buy all my weekly shop from Sainsiburys. But since coming on here I now shop for all my meat at a proper butchers (which is the best thing I've ever done), get my fruit and veg from either a green grocer near to where I work, or an asian shop nearby where I live, and the rest of my shopping from Lidl.
There are exceptions to these rules if I cant get to my preffered shop. But getting back to the point, I am happy to buy fruit and veg from Lidl. Its cheap and practically the same quality as the green grocers. I think it goes off quicker because its sold riper rather than the almost completely unripe rubbish the top supermarkets hawk on you. I really hate supermarket fruit and veg now for this ripeness issue and hate it when my OH buys bananas from Sainsburys ect...
Infact IMO everyone here should stop buying all fruit and veg, meat, fish and bread from supermarkets full stop. And this country should go back to local suppliers on the high street and we'll all be better off!
BTW I love Lidl, I think you'll save money there, and I find the quality of food is better in most instances. The only downside is that the range is limited. You'll probably not see Pampers in there, or if you do they will be quite expensive compared to the Lidl own brand stuff. Infact as a rule of thumb avoid any brands you recognise as they are expensive.SIMPLE SIMON - Met a pie man going to the fair. Said Simple Simon to the pie man, "What have you got there?" Said the pie man unto Simon, "Pies, you simpleton!"0 -
When going to lidl do not let that fact the product is not a brand name you know put you off. Its trial and error.Hi there! We’ve had to remove your signature. It was so good we removed it because we cannot think of one so good as you had and need to protect others from seeing such a great signature.0

One thing I would say is that Lidls cooked meats are STREETS ahead in terms of quality than anyother supermarket. The ham in Lidls is superb compared even to M&S or waitrose quality:beer: Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -

I'm currently buying a particular chocolate from M&S. Does anyone know if Aldi or Lidl sell the same thing? I want to buy it from the cheapest place, though it is on offer at M&S at the moment.
It is milk chocolate with roasted almonds. I know that I have seen chocolate in Lidl that has hazelnuts in it but not almonds. Anyone know if they do it?0 -

I tried some hazelnut chocolate from Aldi a couple of weeks ago which was 45p for 100g. It was nice but it did have hydrogenated fat in it. Since buying more M&S products I don't check every single label anymore but with trying to find alternatives to M&S I will need to start being more diligent with label checking like I used to be.0

lidl nappies are great no leaks. Also their flour is perfect for breadmakers, just make sure you have the right yeast.Penny xxx
Old age isn't bad when you consider the alternative.0 -

The same goes for their jams, chocolate, European cheeses.
I agree with this too. Their ham is pretty amazing - the first time we went to Lidl I wasn't happy with the fact that their big pack of ham cost around £1.80 which was the same price as Asda. But the quality is really great - it's the best cooked ham I've ever had, no kidding.
Personally, there are some things that I don't buy at Lidl but they're few and far between, and based on personal preference rather than quality. I don't like their Balsamic vinegar, for example, because I like really strong vinegar. But because it's cheap I buy Lidl vinegar for cooking and some dressings, and I have a more expensive bottle for when I want more of a 'punch'.
I love their fruit and veg - it doesn't always look the best (particularly because we generally shop later in the day) but it tastes pretty great. I love fruit, but wouldn't be able to afford much more than apples and clementines at the supermarket, so Lidl is really great for me. They've got lots of organic stuff in now too, and there's way less packaging than you'll find at the supermarkets.
I find that generally we spend £20-£25 per week at Lidl, and maybe another £5 at Morrisons, depending on what we're eating.0 -
Well we made it there today anyway!
I'll try and post a decent cost comparison for anyone who's interested (i.e. me!) tomorrow as don't have much time tonight.
I managed to get everything on my list except for frozen sweetcorn. I bought the Lidl (Cien) nappies and pullups and got Pampers Sensitive wipes (for DD) for the same price as the Lidl own ones.
I had popped in on occasion before so I knew they had a limited range of produce and don't as a rule stock well known brand names. I have to be honest I didn't think they were massively cheaper, but my shop cost £42 and I was expecting to spend around £20 this week. That said I did buy the nappies etc so I do need to do the cost comparison to see if it really was dearer. I also confess to a coeplf of impulse buys - penguin biscuits for hubby (chosen by DS and not on offer or anything even. He is only 3 though. I think he likes the picture as he saw Happy Feet last week), some pain au chocolat for me and some multi packs of little bags of sweets for DS party bags next month. Oh and some custard creams just for having :T
Maybe the quality is better, I have yet to determine. But I wasn't unhappy with the quality I was getting from Asda anyway.
I forgot about the carrier bags and managed to get away with only buying 2 at 3p each so it wasn't so bad. The pound for the trolley took me by surprise though! Oh yeah and they dont take credit cards so I couldn't use my 3% cashback card so will have to factor in that cost as well. PLus its further away so another cost implication.
My son was much better behaved though, I think perhaps becsuse the shop wasn't so big or busy and he couldn't get in as many people's ways! And when we went in at first he said "whats happened to the music Mummy?" cos there was no background nonsense playing :rotfl:
It was nice to be able to get around a bit faster. If it works out cheaper overall for the things I got today I might start doing a big shop at Asda one week and then a smaller one at Lidls the weeks in between.
One other thing I just remembered - I didn't spot any customer toilets and this would definitely put me off going there with 2 little children. I didnt really look though so maybe I just didnt see them (and yes before someone points it out I have on many occasions in different places asked to use staff toilets in an emergency and reactions are varied as are the condition of the toilets:eek:
