Cost of Asda vs Lidl ?

Options
I almost always shop at Asda. I am going to try my nearest Lidl tomorrow as I need to get some stuff but not a full weekly shop. Below is list of what I am planing to buy, can anyone tell me if I am likely to find things cheaper at Lidl ? I've written below whether I buy smart price, own brand or what. I was bitten last year shoppng at Costco thinking I would save money but because most stuff was branded I didnt save anything!! I dont want to make that mistake again ......

Thanks for any advice !

Fruit and veg will depend what's on offer. When Lidl have the half price fruit and veg on it's cheaper, but otherwise I don't think there is much difference with smart price prices.

I do have some of these on a receipt from about a month ago from Lidl that was on the table

Eggs (not free range) 10 for 67p
Ham (thin sliced cheap stuff) 49p for 10 slices (smart price is 37p iirc)
Milk 2 pints 65p (not Omega 3 brand of course)

Some of the offers are on https://www.lidl.co.uk
One day I might be more organised...........

thanks dawnybabes, its so hard to ge the cheapest of everything you want in one place! I definitely can't be doing with going to more than one place a week, 2 small children and a 3rd on the way and supermarket shopping is not a good combination!

You'll not find your "best of both" bread, and I doube they sell pampers (not sure though).

You might be looking a while at the ham and salami making up your mind.

To be honest, I really wouldn't go into Lidl and expect to get everything on your list. Lidl is very good though, take some time to investigate and buy some things you wouldn't usually buy.

    That's because it's a marketing con.
  • I have been to Lidl today, our local one in Hampshire has special offers on veges, which is great. Looking at my receipt:

    Free range eggs 87p
    tomato puree tube 24p
    courgettes .79 per kg
    3 peppers 99p
    chopped tin tomatoes 21p

didn't buy anything else on your list but can recommend the malted loaf which is 59p!

not sure about the strong white flour - i'm not getting very good results but it might be that my yeast is old or something - anyone else using lidl flour?
I'm going to feed our children non-organic food and with the money saved take them to the zoo - half man half biscuit 2008

The lidl bread flour has been fine for me. Bread's a funny thing though, it comes out very differently for everyone, you just have to keep experimenting until you crack it.

'Crack it' being the operative words, for bread made from Lidl flour....

    IMO

    Probably my bread making skills.

tr3mor, whether or not omega-3 milk is a marketing con or not isnt going to affect whether Lidl stock it !!

Studies into the benefits of omega-3 for heart disease prevention, growth rate in children and children's attanetion/behaviour have been contradictory, and further studies are being carried out to determine the true benefits - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omega-3_fatty_acid and http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/food_matters/omega.shtml

in the meantime, marketing ploy or not, I am going to continue to give it to me children as part of a balanced diet, couldnt care less if Dairy Crest are making a few extra pennies out of me.
