  • I have always been slightly naive and a bit Pollyanna-ish! Working on fixing that though - not losing the positive and looking for silver linings thing but really to make it less likely that I get taken advantage of. A woman at work told me I was almost too fluffy to survive the world ....

    I need lessons in cynicism!

My fluffiness is now got sharp corners too.

I love the Railway Children too. It gets me every time when Jenny Agutter runs into her fathers arms on the station.
  • FUDDLE you just have to stop playing societies game of must have!!! I don't part with a penny more than I have to, but if I HAVE to then I've saved enough by not being normal by everyone elses standards to have the cash to pay it!! I don't do fashion, hairdressers, make up, food fads, going out and living the high life (except the pub quiz once a week!) and we provide not only lots of our own food, but entertainment value for lots of folks who just don't understand. We have a good and comfortable life and don't in the least feel hard done by over anything, we look after friends homes when they jet off to somewhere exotic and feed pets, etc water greenhouses with nothing in our hearts but pity for them that they are not here enjoying life at home, you only get cynical and bitter pet if the lifestyle is forced on you and you value what others have that you don't. Me, I'm sorry for them because I'm the richest person I know I have home, friends, He Who Knows, my girlies and my Docky, all beyond price and I lack nothing of any value to me, Cheers Lyn xxx.

What a lovely attitude Lyn. I had a conversation with 3 11 yr old boys last night about who has what mobile phones in their class (Yr 6 primary school). Some of them have iPhones, Blackberries, Samsung Galaxies. My DS has just got a phone for his 11th birthday because that's when we'd planned he could have one, as when he starts secondary school he will be catching the bus 10 miles away. But his is a cheap PAYG phone and I HOPE he knows why - not just that we can't afford more but that it's ridiculous to pay £600 for a phone (IMO - apologies to those who did pay that much for a phone, horses for courses and all that). That stuff is not that important. Lessons like that, and not getting into debt, are just as important as teaching them how to cook and wash clothes I reckon.

GQ: the 8.15 interview is a total waste of time and when it's a 3 way argument, it's as much use as a cat flap in a submarine...
However, it is interesting to note which people get interrupted by the interviewers and which ones don't. Just sayin';)

You're spot on Lyn, although I don't play that game anymore ;)

I'm grumpy because I feel like I pay for a company to provide me a service but that company manipulate every single rule for their gain. I hate that. A contract 2 pages long that sets out all what they demand. Where is mine? I'm fed up of huge companies treating me like a minion.

Generalising I know, but that's what it feels like.

I think I've gone too far with the teaching about money with the eldest one. She wanted to go to judo. We were really keen to see her go as she has issues with her height (8 years old in 5-6 clothes, she's tiny) and thought it would do her confidence the world of good. She went to the free trial, enjoyed it but when I was reading the paperwork back at home I blurted out "55 quid for 12 sessions of 45 mins!" She heard and replied "how much! Mam that's a rip off, that's it I'm not going to go". She was all for it until them. Yes it's great she gets money but she's 8 and should be allowed to enjoy these things without worry over cost. :(

That's a pretty good price for judo I think Fuddle. We managed to find karate classes for DS (similar issues, shortest in his class and victim of bullying) for £6 an hour but they were the cheapest we could find. And there is still more expense when they do the grading or extra classes, and for registration when they need that. But DS is really enjoying it and it is helping him in confidence and fitness I think. If DH's contract is stopped or not renewed then we'll have to rethink.
  • FUDDLE we used to say to the girls 'If you don't try all the things in life you think you'd like to be able to do, how are you ever goig to know what you are good at?' She's a canny lass isn't she? Would it make a difference if she paid 50p of her pocket money (I'm assuming here that they get a little) each week towards it and then she might not feel it was costing you more than it was worth to her?
