I know I'm not a "regular" in here, but I do lurk! I just try not to spend too much time posting since I work from home and it is tempting.
Just wanted to say to Pops--if you cook the meatloaf whole, you can then slice it and freeze the slices, or eat them on sandwiches etc. It will probably be easier than trying to cook it one slice at a time.0 -
Popperwell wrote: »Morning All,
Thank you Jem, yes it was our music night that was called off, mcculloch29 and me)but I was cosy last night, it seemed warmer. I slept a bit, I ate a bit and listened to the radio.
I even read a little which I don't do often as my eyesight isn't good. I have kidney disease and well, I try to eat healthily and carefully but reading a book about herbs and another about eating for good health, it is obvious that we "All" eat too much protein(Especially meat)and overwork our kidneys but we don't realise until something goes wrong. And even then because kidneys are so forgiving many have no idea that they are not working as well.
And I have looked at my intake and again I am going to be even more careful...
I do eat smaller portions and will be even more careful. It seems men over the age of 50 should eat around the 50g mark daily. Luckily, it seems I am well within/below that most days but it is amazing how little meat/fish can push that up.
So I will spread my meat intake over the day or if one meal uses up my days intake, the other meals I will eat mainly fruit and veg combinations. I'll tell you what though...meat and fish is going to stretch further...they me a long time now...chicken, turkey and fish is better than red meat.
I also realise because of another book on herbs, some pretty ordinary herbs can work with or against some medicines so I will be watching that too. Without being obsessive about it all.
Moderation and commonsense are the words.
I awoke having had a bit of a strange series of dreams(not nightmares as such)and I have started to forget what they were about and in reality I think I was only asleep for perhaps thirty minutes but I think my gran, dad and mum were in there at various points and for some reason I was in a house of one of mum's sisters(passed away many years ago)and it will be at least 30 years since I was there. Strange what comes into your mind and why...
Pops most people don't have trouble with how much protein they consume, its when people have kidney problems that too much protein can cause further problems...but you are usually talking about more protein than an average athlete takes in .Kidney problems are often genetic or inherited and dehydration often causes further problems in people who are susceptible. Some medicines affect the kidneys and cause problems as well.
Don't confuse the amount of meat with the amount of protein. A lean chicken fillet will weigh about 125 grams when cooked but it will only contain between 23-28 grams of protein even if its good quality. Fish is the same, the amount of protein in it is not the weight of the fish when cooked, if you see what I mean.
Has the doctor advised you how much protein to have because of your kidney problem? Have you been told to cut it down to a certain amount? It's just that the body needs a certain amount of protein to repair itself...
Hope this helps.“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of security he does not forget the possibility of ruin.” Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC):A0 -
2T Thank you,
Years ago I was told that my diet was probably not to blame. And though I don't drink much alcohol my consultant did not say I had to avoid it and the only thing he said back then was don't sit down
to a big steak. I always mention that I eat lots of fruit, veg, chicken and fish when I see him and he seems happy.
I have had a couple of scares over the years though and the meds are both strong and could cause problems. The meds I take include blood pressure tablets, water retention tablets, pain killers, immune suppressents and steroids.

I saw those and was very impressed. When I lived elsewhere in the city, some people built anatomically-correct snowmen opposite our house one evening (we watched) and during the night some s0ds err neutered them.:rotfl:

VJsMum, glad you're liking your new class, and isn't it a joy to have a know-better-than-teacher one to [STRIKE]torm[/STRIKE] oops! I mean, educate. I've known adult ed tutors who are also high school teachers who reckon that there is usually at least one bloke who registers in an adult ed class below his attainment level just for the purposes of showing-off.
I once flounced out of an adult ed course. The tutor seemed more interested in flirting and chatting with the few blokes in class than teaching the rest of us IT. If that wasn't irritating enough, when she told us how to do something and it didn't work, she implied I wasn't following her written instructions and when I got her to watch over my shoulder whilst I demonstrated that Excel doesn't do what she said it would when given those instructions, she looked around vacantly and asked other classmates if THEY knew how it worked.
Sheesh, I thought, and I'm paying good money for this?! So I flounced. Slightly spoiled the flounce by forgetting the shopping bag and having to flounce back in again.:rotfl:
I can remember hearing a tale of a 10ft snow sculpture being built outside a British Forces barrack block in Germany -the female soldiers' block iirc. Squaddies being what they are you can probably guess what the sculpture represented (if not - here's a big clue: it was circumcised.)
It was a long, cold winter and with the block being north facing, the sculpture lasted until April, when orders went out that it had to be demolished as a general was due to visit, and it didn't exactly fit with the impression they wanted to leave.
Re the adult education tutor - it makes me hopping mad when I hear stories like this, when there are really good tutors who can't get jobs. I'm glad you walked out, but you should have complained.
All tutors should have an annual observation and review, and should be at least one level (but preferably two levels) above the level they are teaching. (I got rated Outstanding on mine, did I mention that? I probably did... I made sure I told everyone! No sense in hiding your light under a bushel.)
I've got level 4 Maths and English qualifications (1st year Uni level) but there is no way I would teach A-Level Maths.
A -Level English I could probably teach, but happily, I will never have to. What I do teach is to GCSE level and I'm very happy with that.Erma Bombeck, American writer: "If I had my life to live over again... I would have burned the pink candle, sculptured like a rose, that melted in storage." Don't keep things 'for best' - that day never comes. Use them and enjoy them now.0 -

What a brillant idea Fairyprincessk, I'm so glad that I asked. It was yellow stickered and has gone slightly passed its date but as I have often found that is not a problem if you cook something properly and it is piping hot intially. I guess one frozen and then as each portion/slice defrosts you just eat it cold(not reheat it?)
I have not purchased or made meatloaf before and...the last time I had it could be over 40 years ago:eek::pat friends house when I stayed for tea.
I had thought I could have it with salad, with a kind of fry up(eggs and chips etc...)or vegetables/potatoes and gravy so it gives me a few options...
I would never have thought of the idea of sandwiches...

softstuff- good news about physio, and good luck with the house too
millymolly - well done, I do hope things get better for you:)
vjsmum - its good that you are enjoying work, so many people dont. I am the same over the house I cant get on with something else if the house is all sixes and sevens
possession - it may be more effective to inform the weather that the BBC say its not supposed to be snowingwe are having little bits of snow, enough to cover the car and make walking difficult for me but not enough to make a snowman or close school - its useless snow really
Jem - I was just considering brownies for group tomorrow, but cant find my recipe, was just about to look out another. As for your relatives - we all know people like that, the trick is to limit the damage and steer clear as much as possible, as for Facebook, I have discovered I can group people in sections and then avoid them altogether without the whole - why have you defriended me converstation.
Nannato3 - welcome
Its a difficult day here, with DH still being ill in bed, DD18 off at uni for an interview, I cant have my mum or dad around in case they catch anything and my mum takes it into the hospital, so am literally running with no safety netDad has driven DD to uni and left her there - he is working today and has three funerals to do (its his 10th in a fortnight - this weather is upping the funeral load hugely) but after that I had to get the others there solo.
Not hugely successfully, DD6 was late, I cant run with my back being bad and manage a very slow waddle, so I was lost before I started really.
And as I have no extra hands I have to pick her up early too in order to be able to collect DS8 as well.
I would have done it the other way as she was late but taking DS8 to DD school brings his memories back from his disastrous time there so we avoid it if at all possible. I feel guilty as it means she has lost half an hour of school today.
I managed the shopping and collected DS14 on time (yay!) and we have come home and negotiated changing cat litter between us - OH usually does it and with a bad back there was lots of yelps and squeals. Her ladyship has turned her nose up at it as its the old tray the boys used to have but she will just have to get on with it!
Aldi have some really nice cold weather gear in at the moment, I got DS8 some more wellie socks 2 pair for £2, Mr A wanted £3 a pair when I looked.0 -
As long as you only reheat it once after cooking then you can still reheat it after freezing--so you could cook it and then freeze and then reheat and it should be fine--just dont cook, reheat, freeze, reheat. If that makes sense. My OH loves meatloaf and I make it from scratch so it tends to make more than we really need at once. That said-he usually demolishes it cold on sandwiches before I get it in the freezer--needed or not.0

My world is getting slowly back to rights - I have a pot of soup bubbling away on the cooker.
My OH laughed at me this morning when i said that I didn't feel secure if there was no soup in the house! So, a very old onion, some extremely soft celery, a bag of YS carrot and swede diced (25p:D) and a stock cube (dated Aug. 2010) a handful of lentils and some cumin, et voila! spicy carrot and lentil soup. Total cost would be under 50p I reckon.
No cake yet though
:rotfl:I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -
Sounds lovely VJM,
I have loads of soup recipes and ways to use up leftover veg...must get around to doing something about it...mind I have lots of soup in the cupboards to use up first.
The meatloaf is now in the oven, it is not as big as I thought it was(glad I paid less than £1.80 for it on offer...rather than the full price, I don't have a mincer but looking at it I think I could make one myself and it would not be any more expensive...I could add my own herbs and combination of meats(I assume I just have to bind mince together in some way)and either use a kind of food processor to make the meat's texture smaller or get your hands in there.
This one is approx 47% Pork and 30% beef and it has some bacon rashers over it...heaven knows what the rest of it contains:rotfl:It has some kind of sauce I am supposed to pour over it five minutes before it finishes cooking.
Then again being single perhaps having one ready made is easier..."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson
