:j You're a freaking genius! TY so much.
I have the splitter off the main phone point, then the phone cable goes into a powerstrip and another phone cable goes out to the physical phone. This apparent eccentricity was the way the Computer Wizard had to navigate around the limitations of plug sockets in my gaff.
Anyroad, the splitter holding the phone cable had attachments which aren't the same so couldn't swop them but just unplugged the spitter-powerstrip phone cable from the powerstrip and re-plugged and now I have dial tone!!!!!!!
Oh thankfulness. I was beginning to go into Stress Bunny mode. This is like the Duracell bunny but less amusing, btw.:p
Hooray! I've had such moments frequently myself! Over the years I've learned to wiggle wires and reseat plugs before going into a flat spin :rotfl:
I still have a wired router, with a splitter arrangement as well. When I first set it up, I had a different splitter - it used to pop itself out and I'd have to re-plug it back in. Not all the way out, or I'd have called an exorcist, but just enough to disconnect. It was weird and I never found a reasonable explanation for it.I believe in the freedom of spinach and the right to arm bears.

You'd be surprised at the depth of my ignorance. I have a pal who I refer to up here as the Computer Wizard who has held my hand though many an IT-related scrape. I make him draw me diagrams if I don't know what's going on (99% of the time this being the case).
Just over a decade ago when I got this computer (my first and only) I went to turn it on and got a black screen with writing all over it instead of Windows.
Rang the Wiz in hysterics. He listened for a moment and said very patiently; "GQ, take the floppy disc out."I'd left one in the previous time I used it and the poor pooter was apparently trying to find Windows on a floppy which I believe is about the equivalent of trying to find Africa somewhere on the Isle of Wight.:rotfl:Well, I never did it again, did I?! The other mistakes are too numerous to mention. I'll get there in the end.
Im way behind the times too, ive only had this lap top 2 months now, before that I had a old huge big monitor on the desk,, also iv also got one of those old routers...
And you want to look at my old phone its a tesco jobby 8 yrs old, but it do me okay and never let me down.....
Everybody say they are short of money , but a lot of people have 42 inch odd flat screens, ipods and iphones, or pads ?? costing hundreds of pounds, espeically young children have the lot..................
Shortage of money a few years back meant no house phone let alone mobiles........
My sons 2 boys also had new ipads or iphones for christmas and they too "dont have no money "..........................
I too need to diet a bit im 2 stone over weight , but I seem to have "lost control " with it all, I just cant get motivated into anything, im sick to death of the weather, its dark , grey, and dank so much , I will wait til im in the spring mood, at the moment I need my comfort food, without grub im pretty miserable , im very active and fit and rarely sit down during the day so I dont think I will put anymore on.........................:o Sheila0 -
Had a lovely day today walking around town in the sunshine. We went in to pay the phone bill (yet again the postman has not appeared in the village for over two weeks!) and get my glasses bent back into shape since my OH stood on them when he had the nose bleed.
I have decided to complain to the head office about the post man again and send a copy to the Greek consumers complaints section. After all, its the responsibility of the Post office to make sure the mail gets delivered. I was disgusted on Monday when I realised the old folks had not got their pensions delivered by him either, God knows how long they have been waiting for them.
None of the opticians were open, its apparently a new rule that none of them can open on Saturdays...great eh? So we went for a walk around the shops and the market and bought lots of fresh fish and veggies. It was the cheapest I had seen fish there for years and I paid 4 euros for enough fresh sardines (caught today) to make us 6 meals each. We bought a kg of walnuts fresh from the tree for 4 euros and got cheap bananas...he gave us the lemons we asked for.
Stopped and had a lovely meal in a little taverna near to the market, oven baked chicken with red sauce with peppers and garlic and oven baked potatoes. Lovely.
It was lovely walking in the sun, it was 16 in the sun and 13 in the shade but it rained when we got home and it feels like its going to freeze tonight. Have the log fire blazing and the electric blanket on. Off to look at the car boot sales tomorrow.“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of security he does not forget the possibility of ruin.” Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC):A0 -
7ww - ((hugs)) its hard, I used to watch my grandad change when he was away and then had to return home alone, its soul destroying.
We are off out to a "posh" resturant , so OH has decided to wear jeans and trainers ??? Err no!! Sent him back to get changed.0 -
Hi everyone! (((7WW))) i hope you feel better soon. Jamanda that sounds such a lovely thing you are doing for your parents and i hope the arrangement will work well. I suspect having the extra living space so you arent under each others feet all the time will help a lot.
I have been busy the last few days and although i kept up with the thread, whenever i went to post i would be interupted by one or other of the children so i gave up in disgust.
The christmas decs are down and the living room has been hoovered. My dad very kindly took me out today looking for some stuff to repair my kitchen cupboards and draws. It is called Brummer? we didnt find it but did get some ronseal stuff that will hopefully do the job. I was also able to get new school shoes for my son as his are flapping at the toes and a new clothes horse to dry the laundry as the leg broke off mine.
Re large screen tv's i have a 32" but its a huge heavy box of a thing that took both my uncle and my cousin to carry up my stairs into the living room and a fair amount of cursing too! (and skinned knuckles where it only just fit around the bend in the stairs) The teenagers have phones but not smartphones and we dont have ipads or anything fancy....although i would like an e-reader at some point.0 -
Kidkat, happy anniversary (ours is Monday - 11 years....where'd that go?) hope you have a lovely meal
7WW - hugs x. We've just watched DHs parents go through the experience of taking in "grandad" and seeing him through to a dignified end. I must admit when we brought this house it was with the thought of "we can convert the garage easily into an area for either DH or parents" I grew up in the same house as my grandparents and watched them grow old in a family invironment and the inevitable end. Id like to think Id be able to accommodate either set of parents as they need it but at the moment they still drive me scatty.
GQ - I live wi a frustrated techno-freak, he has the knowledge to strip down everything and rebuild it in 7 different ways that will work better but his lack of mobility make it impossible for him to do it without help......dare I say I put on the "blonde" act now and then to make him feel useful (and to wind him up......of course). We met via the net 13 years ago so odds are I must have known at some stage what I was doing... my Dad handed me his old computer in a box with the cables and said "there you go, see what you can find"......as it happens I don't think he thought it would be a husband."Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. Softstuff - will be thinking of you all on Tuesday, cant believe its taken so long to get going, very hard for family to move on with such a delay.
Glad to hear the movie is good, I have arm twisted a few friends to go with me and make it a girly night soon.
Have to go to optician now with DS8 who has broken his glasses yet again, major meltdown last night so its picking up pieces time today.
Its our wedding anniversary and we are supposed to go out for a meal, but I have to say I am really not keen on the whole thing, seems alot of work for little gain
Thanks Kidcat, I think I'm ok about it, just worried about mum. The movie surprised me by having no gratuitous sex scenes, a bit of humour and I thought Tom Cruise made a great Jack Reacher (and I've read a lot of Lee Child). Happy Wedding Anniversary too.Mrs_Veg_Plot wrote: »Softstuff these things are never easy. Will be thinking of you and your family.
Sorry about my last post yesterday it sounds a bit woe is me and that was not my intention.
Thanks Mrs VP. And your post was hardly woe is me, this is where we can have a good moan and be safe, for some of us it's the only place we can.I salute those of you who are continuing to jog and run. I'm scared too but will be walking as fast as my little (big) bot will wobble me comin home from the school run in Tues morning
The first time was the scariest fuddle. I thought I'd done myself a real mischief! I honestly didn't know how I'd manage to do it again. But it's a really steep improvement curve and doesn't hurt anywhere near as much the second go. And even less the third.7_week_wonder wrote: »Softstuff, I hope everything goes as smoothly as it can for you an your mum on Tuesday. I'm very impressed with your new get up and go for 2013: long may it continue!
Please can I have a bit of a hug/talking to as I'm feeling a bit down in the dumps.
Thanks 7WW. The activity seems to be begetting more activity. I also did gardening and swimming yesterday. Going wild. And you can certainly have a hug *hugs*. I can well understand how it was with you and your mum, I have the same every time I fly back from England. I keep telling myself that I can care, I can love her and I can do everything within my ability to help, but I'm not 100% responsible for her happiness IYSWIM.
Hugs to anyone I missed, in a hurry this morning, getting the washing done before going out with my MIL.Softstuff- Officially better than 0070 -
I have a cheap third hand phone that does not have a camera. I hate mobile phones with a vengeance and only carry it for emergencies. I hate people ringing me asking where I am or what I am up to.....I soon tell them its none of their business. Even worse is the fact they ring me to speak to my husband instead of ringing him on his own mobile, it infuriates me. We have a 32 inch tv bought five years ago but I rarely watch it. I would rather be reading, on the internet or doing something else. I do like to listen to radio two now and again for the golden oldies. My OH loves gadgets and technical things and has loads of them. I have to convince him he doesn't need any more.
We are looking after our friend's musical equipment till he comes back to Greece..its already been two years and its driving me crazy having it hanging around and making things look cluttered. I hate a cluttered house and living space. Most of it is going to go up the loft as soon as possible, probably when I spring clean this year.
A friend came round today and asked if we could book him a flight by our credit card if he gave us cash..I am afraid the answer was no as we are subject to currency change over fees, then fees for booking by credit card and if he wanted to cancel we would have all the hassle that follows to get the money back. No was the right answer, and its one I am going to be using more this year to people.“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of security he does not forget the possibility of ruin.” Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC):A0 -
The flip side of it is that you can have tangled techie things when you're doing ok then SHTF and you have zilch... Just because you have stuff doesn't mean you have money. When you really have no money you can sell the stuff and much of it you can, but you get less for it than it would cos to replace anyway. Take this phone for instance - fuddle has an iPhone! She cracks on she has nowt! This phone is in to it's 5th year and on a £13 a month contract, no worse than the pay as you go tariffs.
I just wanted to give a differing perspective re stuff and having no money.
I sold a lot to get the fees for the bankruptcy. Yes it costs to go bankrupt - £1000 for us. When it comes to it stuff can be sold to get you out of a pickle - I guess no one is truelly skint while they have their stuff but to sell it scrapes in a pittance.0 -
That is so true Fuddle, we used to do the car boot sale here but people would haggle over 25 cents for a nearly new jumper. I stopped doing it as we were out of pocket after paying for the table fee and the petrol.
I now take everything we don't use to the village recycling....we put things on the wall at the side of the recycling bins that others can take and use. I took two winter coats the other day and they were gone in minutes.
Since I moved to Greece I realised how many material things I really don't need to live a happy life. I am much happier without the feeling I have to have things because everyone else has them.“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of security he does not forget the possibility of ruin.” Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC):A0
