Fuddle,
It's quite difficult to secure a shed properly. A pal of mine had his fishing rods stolen from the shed and when he told me the replacement cost I nearly passed clean out !
He simply keeps the rods indoors now, all the other fishing guff goes in the shed, although with regard to his bait it still isn't far enough away from the house for his wifey.... she suggested another continent.0 -
Oh that grabbit board is dangerous - but good! Just seen a thread about Premier Inn January sale and booked a night in York for when DH is off in March - Family room for £25, bargainous!! Got our National Trust cards so should be able to find plenty of free stuff to do when we are there. It's not too far for 1 night but far enough to be a bit of a pain to do in one day, particularly when getting our two out of the house is like herding cats.
Mind you with all the climbing onto furniture DS is doing the men in white coats may have come for by then. It's so wonderful he is doing it but the boy has no fear!!!!! I'm a bag of nerves - I turned my back for literally 10 seconds and he'd pulled himself up onto the couch and was about to launch himself at the floor over the arm.
The tree has come down now - going to have 2 disappointed small people tomorrow but they were driving me demented dismantling it - I was about ready to take it down on boxing day but they loved it so much I couldn't bear to be such a spoil sport.
Also got about 1/3 of the way through DS's DLA form today and not a tissue needed (yet) - I must be getting tough in my old age! lol! So all in all a productive day.

Fuddle, re knees, I've had a bit of a prob with both, starting well before age 20. The right one in particular used to suddenly give way in mid step, chucking me forward and down until the thigh muscles grabbed hold and stopped me.
About 5 years ago I had Xrays which confirmed that I have osteo arthritis behind both kneecaps, just wear and tear, nothing to be done. And, until reading your post, I hadn't consciously thought about how they've not given me a squeak of trouble (and they giving-way thingy hasn't happened in a decade) for years.
Deffo get it checked out but please don't assume that it's a steep downward slope and that you get a bit more crocked each year. I'm about 15 years older than you and can testify it doesn't. Plus, your lifestyle with a lot of walking should stand you in good stead. You never hear bad stuff about walking as a form of exercise, do you?:rotfl:
Well, have discovered that my weight drops just below 16st in the morning and is just above 16 in the evening (2 days' worth of data, I'll have you know). Been reading that book by Mark Sissons Primal Blueprint and it makes a lot of sense to me.
Temperamentally, I'm not one of life's joiners-of-clubs (would rather have a root canal filling tbh) so am doing it my way. Which is to stop the upward climb by removing the sugary carp and progressively getting up to the lottie more as the afternoons draw out. Can't currently get up there in daylight after workday.
I feel positive about it. Aim for about 2 lb a month and anything else is a bonus, eh?
Bye for now, GQ xxEvery increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Fuddle, don't assume it is arthritis in the knees, there's rather a lot of pain and odd movement can happen if the muscles are unbalanced around the knees. Hubby had MRIs of both knees, he was getting a grind and sort of unnatural kneecap movement. Turns out there was nothing wrong with the kneecap or bone, just that one muscle down the outside of his leg was too tight and the one down the other side too weak. After rather a lot of exercise he's about 99% good now. So well worth a mention to the doc and a further investigation.
Meanwhile in my corner here.... I have to say, 2nd jog, harder not easier! I can't say I find it thrilling, but it does seem (surprisingly to me) to be a whole body workout. It makes everything from my shoulders to ankles ache. The only thing seemingly fine is my feet. I need to keep this up, please someone nag me if I don't mention I've done it!
I'm making gyoza/dumplings tomorrow, wrappers included. I may need a bit of luck for that.Softstuff- Officially better than 0070 -
Carbonara? Is it an easy dish? Eldest DD would like me to make it as mil has took the kids out for lunch. Could anyone recommend an Italian cookbook?
No need for a cookbook. Carbonara is really easy. You can make it one of two ways either as bacon and egg pasta or with a white sauce.
Cabonara (bacon and egg pasta):
Cook enough spghetti with half a vegetable stock cube. In a deep walled frying pan stir fry bacon (cut into thin strips) and some crushed garlic. Add a good pinch of parsley. Switch up eggs (I allow 1 per person). Add 2 spoonfuls of the spaghetti water to the bacon and keep stirring. Drain the pasta and add it to the frying pan. Add the switched up eggs and using a fork pull the spaghetti through the egg mixture and mix the bacon through. Add a little Grana Padano or Pecorino grated cheese (about a desert spoonful) and stir through. The eggs should coat the pasta and look like fine scrambled eggs once its ready.
Serve and add a little more grated cheese (Grana Padano or Pecorino) and a twist of black pepper.
Carbonara (option 2 and this is low fat):
Cut up a gammon steak (1 will be enough for 2 people) and pan fry it along with an onion (diced) or spring onion. Set your spaghetti to cook along with a vegetable stock cube. Once the gammon is cooked and the onion softened add 2 tablespoonful of vegetable stock (from spaghetti pan) to frying pan and add a little plain flour. Stir and add flour until you get a creamy sauce, add a good pinch of mixed herbs and a desertspoonful of grated cheese. If the sauce thickens too much add a little more vegetable stock. Drain pasta and mix it through the sauce and serve.

Morning folks,
well we, that's me and my boys, made it to the garage for 8am. DS8 moaned and groaned about getting up early and then apologised about it before we left - its good to see him becoming emotionally more mature. DS6 as usual didn't complain a bit - he is generally so good natured but when he does blow, he's a hurricane 0-10 very quickly.
Car only needed a new bulb to pass (surprised as we checked the bulbs last night but anyway) and the garage do a free re-test. However front tyres just about passed so am getting them replaced next week, I'm not taking chances with all the wet weather and still possibility of ice again. Also need a couple of other bulbs replacing as loosing their colour. Glad I have the money saved though it will have to come out of the house repairs fund but can't be helped.
Popped into supermarche before 9 afterwards and it was dead, so lovely to wander about in peace and quiet and boys were so well behaved (and didn't ask for anything) I treated us all to a cake at the pattiserie bit. DS6 bypassed all the kiddy cakes as usual (and they did look cute) for a fresh cream choc eclair! He takes after his mother where cakes are concerned!
Fuddle - I am a lot older than you at 44 and still don't know what I want to do now I have children.
waffle warning:
Drifted my way from one admin job to another for years, always picking jobs I was over qualified/experienced for, so low was my self-esteem and confidence. Finally encouraged by an ex, picked a challenging job, was amazed to get it and then headhunted for two different more senior roles there. I applied for one of them, got it and then soon after had a breakdown as I had pushed myself too hard, became a workaholic and hadn't dealt with a lifetime of non-work issues. I was off sick a while, on the ADs and counselling and then used part of my flat sale (had met DH then and we moved into his rented flat) to fund longer term therapy, best thing I ever did. Went back to low paid, part-time admin work again before giving up to raise a family. 8 or so years down the line and I still don't know what I want to do or realistically could do. I have issues of childcare (expense and DS6 - could he handle it?) and no family to step in, DH works 1.5 hours away from home. With such a big gap on my CV and a couple of health issues/disability and my age - I wonder what my options are. On the other hand, I have many years of work experience, some good qualifications (but they are mostly ancient) and undertaken a variety of courses and voluntary work since I had kids - and I am good at writing CVs and applications. I am unsure whether I want to go back to work as well. I wonder if I have genuine reasons to make staying at home a better option or whether I am finding excuses and I just scared underneath. I keep hoping fate will intervene and decide for me. I have thought endlessly about re-training - the expense puts me off as money is tight enough now but then again if we had two wages coming in?
sorry have rambled shamelessly, will go and do some housework, want to sort out living room and boys' bedroom - the toys, the blasted toys everywhere! Despite feeling tired already, I feel pretty positive today.

Fuddle I had a thought regarding jobs. One of my friends needed jobs either from home or close to home when her kids were little. She became a 'helper' for various eldery people and couples in the retirement accomodation nearby. She not only cleaned for them (the accomodation is set up so each person or couple has their own bedroom, livingroom, wet room and a basic kitchen with kettle, toaster and microwave), but for some did shopping. Some wanted heavier items but were unable to carry them and it wasn't feasible to have say one item delivered. She also took in ironing and did dog walking for a couple that ended up in jobs that meant they couldn't get home at lunchtime. How about advertising in the local newsagents as say "Fuddle Handy Helper" or something similar
.

Hi all
Been away for a bit but back now and read the last 10 pages.
Seems we are all on a weight loss "thang". Me too
I am 5'7" and probably weigh about 11.5 stone. I'd like to be 10 but 10.5 would do. Am worried about my face getting drawn by losing too much - the "face or !!!" thing rings true with me and I can wear big knickers on the !!! (sorry, Pops)
So the booze is going for January (unless a proposed work trip to Sri Lanka comes off - can't fly sober!) - did it last year and it was amazingly easy. Cake only at weekends (haven't even started the christmas cake yet - in fact it isn't even iced!) and some relatively low calorie meals. More exercise - walking if nothing else). THis is the year I turn 50 (gulp) and here starts a year long "getting used to the idea and looking the best I can to spite it". Vain I know, but there you have it!
Happy new year to all - I really must get dressed, it's nearly 2 pm
edit - blessed swear filter. I only said @$$I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -
