Thanks unigirl. It probably wouldn't last any longer thank that anyway.
a block of 'Baking fat' is nearly half the price of a block of butter. What is the difference?
Sorry questions coming thick and fast today!0 -

I'm trying to combat the price of sliced ham.
I no longer buy slices of ham (packets of ham) as the price per kg is just bonkers! What I now do is buy a piece of gammon, cook it and slice it. I then freeze several portions and just take out a portion when we want ham for sandwiches etc. Much cheaper per kg and just as tasty.0 -
I wouldn't ever use butter for baking in the old days when I baked a lot. I would use cheap marge and extra vanilla essence.0

Thanks everyone for the replies. As tempting as it is to shout and yell he is one nasty person. Originally he worked for the council, and bought his house while mine is still rented (£62 a week lol). He regualry complains about us, and others but the council have a duty of care to follow up all complaints. He is registered as partialy disabled, but at 2 in the morning when his out and about snooping he never needs his mobility scooter or walking stick. In the summer he could paint his fence unaided, so maybe 2013 i will make it my job to report him for the obvious benefit fraud.
My husbands employers are great, they were laughing at the call in the office. The justice is if he has any parcels from his company that need delivering he has to go to pick them up from the depot, its a good half an hours drive away. Other neighbours know he will drop them off on his way home.

I'm the opposite Mar, I only like using natural fats. I used to do some work years ago for a company that refined vegetable oils and turned them into marge etc so I knew about all the processes they went through and I just thought 'tweren't nat'ral. I think they may have changed the processes more recently because they now know that transfats are so bad for you. Though I don't think the new processes are exactly simple.
But if you are making pastry, half and half lard and butter doesn't work out any more expensive than marge and makes lovely short pastry. Lard actually contains more mono-unsaturated fat than saturatedIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
Lavandula - I would heartily agree if not go as far as to say even tastier!
Fuddle - As for chicken thighs, I personally think they are tastier than breast anyway. I find it pretty easy to de-bone them, or sometimes cook on the bone and then pick off the meat depending on what I'm going to do with it, but would find it almost impossible to describe how in words! I've not looked but there MUST be a video demonstration on youtube - there are demos of pretty much everything on there! A nice thing to do once deboned is to put stuffing in the middle, wrap back up and tie and roast. Once cooled you can slice it and get that fancy chicken and stuffing slices which are so yummy in sandwiches, the stuffing also makes the meat go further (hee hee).
So sorry so many of you have such rotten neighbours but I'm sorry I'm not swapping you for mine - they are mad as a bucket of frogs but lovely. One side kept an elderly horse in the garden but sadly he had to be PTS last week as he has been ill for a while and was getting worse. Poor neighbour is devastated as he was her (admittedly rather large) baby but knows it was the right thing to do however hard.
Hugs where needed (or wanted) x0 -
Yep, I am not fond of marge. I do use only butter now for spreading, and for making flapjacks. Just that in the old days I baked a lot and couldn't afford butter at all. I didn't notice any difference in taste but maybe now I would.0

Nuttyp I expect the council know he is just a moaner. To be honest, he must be really miserable if all he can do is spy on his neighbours. He could use his time much better to help people if he so wanted. I am really lucky with my neighbours and know nearly all of them by name and the others I am on pleasant terms with.
We have snow forecast for Saturday! Only a light shower, but still snow. At least it won't be rain!!
Hair - you could all just have a buzz cut/skinhead like I have :rotfl:. Saves a fortune on hairdressing bills and shampoo, saves time on faffing around in the mornings. Twenty minutes once a fortnight to shave it down again and a quick rub over with a wet flannel every evening before bed, or in the shower and it's done.
Luth5er hello, are you new? Why do you have so many scones left over? Maybe you could take them round to all your neighbours and just say hello?
Well, must crack on. I need to do some hoovering and then I am making my sister an angel garland instead of a Christmas card. There will be glitter everywhere.
