Pops, I use loads of eggs, in baking & to eat on their own, I never take any notice of sell buy dates & I've only had one bad egg in 43 years of running my own home.

MONNAGRAN nice to have you home, glad you had a nice break away and hope you now have recharged batteries. I understand the frustrations of only being able to send support and virtual hugs to those suffering problems but I feel that if that IS all you can do, and it usually is, then it is better than nothing. I hope that the support of others and the feeling that at least a few folks actually care for your wellbeing makes a small difference to how you feel and perhaps lightens your mood, and makes you feel that you are not entirely unsupported and alone. There are lots of experienced contributors who give such good advice if they have it and wonderful friends like McCulloch who not only support but because of location actually physically go and help. I wish there was a magic wand to wave whenever these problem times occur but as there isn't I'll just keep the support and empathy going because it's ALL I can do!!! Cheers Lyn xxx.0

Nice to see you back Monnogran, of course you were missed!
It looks like another lovely day here, and because we got quite a lot of chores done yesterday I think we can have a little outing today, somewhere free in the sun. Tomorrow rain is forecast so yukky stuff like tax returns and checking wills can be done. Plus cleaning. Ugh, I hate cleaning. Half term is looming ahead of me but I work from home and can't really take holiday at the moment so the kids will be watching a lot of telly if it's raining this week.0 -
I can't grow pansies or mint. Rosemary dies every winter and I have to keep buying new. What I have loads of is aquilegia and forget me not. And chickweed!0

The rain has gone but it still feels chilly, hopefully it will be a bit warmer today as I have some garden sorting to do, just general housework and taking out the last of a stand of cabbage which has just gone over and is looking sad. I'll use up all the middles and make my cabbage and sausage casserole which is tasty. I made a nice thing yesterday from the wartime era, a potato roll stuffed with savoury carrot filling and baked in the oven until it crisped on the outside. It was really simple ingredients but very savoury and tasty and I had it with some mushy peas that needed using up and gravy it was just the thing for such a cold and dismal day. I have another 3 portions so that's lunch today sorted and tomorrow and Monday. I walked the boy yesterday along the lane with the old Oak Trees and the tree surgeons have made a super job of the trees, well half of them, I assume the other half will be done this coming week. They have also taken out all the undergrowth and cleared the ditch beside them, it is a really well done job and I hope will give my old friends a further lease of life, they have had big branches fall and even a couple of the bigger old trees in the recent past, this trim might make them more stable and give them a longer lifespan, I certainly hope so. Sadness though as the plot they stand around was sold and they are currently taking down a lovely old bungalow that stood there to build a 5 bed detached jobbie, I always feel sad when things like that happen, but in commerce there is no sentiment and the builder didn't buy the plot to look at!!! Have a nice day everyone and I hope you all get a much dryer and warmer day too, goodness knows we'd all feel better if we did, Cheers Lyn xxx.
Lyn, sorry if someone else has asked and I haven't noticed but could we have the recipe for your carrot & potato roll? Sounds fascinating, I remember my Gran/mum having a WI recipe book full of lots of inventive recipes from the wartime. Thank you0 -
Another lovely day here in Lincolnshire. Yesterday I pressure washed the patio, patio table and chairs and the concrete down the side of the bungalow.
Didn't get done last year as they bought in the hosepipe ban before I could borrow the washer. Table and chairs need staining again as they are peeling, will rub them down today or tomorrow, and then can re do them in garage if it rains later in week.
Also putting in runner beans and planting out some lettuce, I cheated and bought some plants as the seeds I put in a couple of weeks ago haven't come up yet although the radishes are just showing.
Not going to pork chop and trimmings for dinner tonight now instead have decided to have Mr M beefburger (on offer) with salad and eat it outside, with rhubarb from garden for afters.
Thank you for all the kind words and hugs

You know though I am good at using food up and not wasting, I wonder how many eggs I have thrown out because of the media. I have also introduced more eggs back into my diet(mainly boiled)but plan to add scrambled eggs again as it is such an easy dish. I have a few others I find as easy and quick to do...MrsLurcherwalker wrote: »...and wonderful friends like McCulloch who not only support but because of location actually physically go and help.
And friends like McCulloch have the right attitude to say "Right this is a problem how do we solve it or if we can't what can we do to make it better" and not give in and without betraying her confidence it took a lot of effort to get here and help me.
I hope that I can return the favour in some way, having said that better that it is for nice reasons rather than because of a nasty reason but those are the times we need most support.
I know its coincidence and yet you do wonder...a week after Mum passed away and almost to the time, the front door blew open(its never happened before or since in something like 50 years)
A few minutes ago Mum's wardrobe door opened and a bag containing some her clothes opened and fell out. Why this particular time and after months when I have never disturbed or opened it?
Seems a nice day weatherwise, calm and sunny. So hope you all have a good day and find something to enjoy whether its doing nothing or catching up on a task that has been delayed."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

Hi ALFSMUM you surely can
CARROT ROLL
8 good sized potatoes
a little butter/margarine for mashing
salt and pepper
FILLING
2 good sized carrots
1 onion
a nut of butter/marge
half a teaspoon of mixed herbs
3 tablespoons of rolled oats/fine oatmeal
1 good teaspoon of marmite/yeast extract
salt and pepper
Peel and cut the potatoes and cook in boiling water until done. Drain really well and mash adding only seasoning and a little butter/marge they should be dry. Chop the onion small and grate the carrots. Melt the butter/marge in a pan on a low heat and cook the onion until it is transparent, then add the carrots and a little water and cook until carrots are softening. Add in all the other ingredients and cook on a very gentle heat with the lid on until just cooked through. Give it a stir a couple of times to stop it sticking.
Line a baking sheet with some foil and grease it with a little oil/marge etc. Take half the potato and make a flat rectangular base on the foil about half an inch thick, using a little extra potato to make walls along the long sides about half an inch high. Carefully put the carrot filling on to the base between the 'walls'. Cover with the rest of the potato and make sure that the edges are sealed down over the filling. Take a fork and make ridges on the potato to help it go crispy and them spray it with a little oil. Put it into a good heat oven 200/220 deg C for about 45 minutes until the potato is crisp and browning on the outside.
I served it with mushy peas and some gravy. It reheated really well yesterday in the microwave, I gave it 7 minutes covered with a dome.
It's pleasantly savoury but don't expect a 'big' flavour burst, I like it, I hope you do, Cheers Lyn xxx.0 -
Morning toughies, second day of sunshine here in God's own county! :j
I did a long post late last night about all sorts but lost it - the gist of it was thanks for the sun yesterday so DS6 had a smashing party, all in the garden, no fights (kids or adults!), and most of the food went!
It's been hard reading some posts about alcohol and severe illness. We've some of both in our family, but not as bad as some, although 2 of my dad's causes of death, as per the certificate, are directly caused by drink, so I've had a quiet weep in sympathy with you peeps. xxoo
Hoping we can get some more gardening done and take the littlies to a park for some free vitamin D!

RosiePP, there are cherries for sale at the farm shop for under £6 a kilo.
They also had organic (interpret, all funny shapes and sizes) tomatoes but another woman took all the best ones! Reasonable price too.
Bought 2 poppy plants, Oriental, for my early birthday present to myself.
Lovely sunny day!0
