Hello all you supporters, I'm feeling very supported today, having tried to read all your messages! It is amazing how all our minds run on the same lines.
Thanks for reminder about wellies, I will also try Pledge, use it on shoes already. It wont help with hubby's wellies, they are tastefully decorated with brown fence paint and green shed paint. Yesterday at the £ shop I got some lovely woolly innersoles for extra insulation, as I remember 2 years ago when we had snow for months, wellies were the safest footwear. I still ended up on my btm several times :rotfl:
I also got a lovely 2013  calendar with daily spaces for Mum/Dad/kids, which will fit all hospital etc appointments, last one cost me about £10.
Sunshine hope you enjoy the crochet, it is so difficult to sit still once you get used to using you hands while watching TV. I have been knitting hats for Christmas boxes for needy children, last one to be finished tonight so they can be packed.
VJsmum thanks for the patterns, I find those woolly waiscoats very necessary in the cold. Maybe my next project.
Off to make some lunch, anti-inflammatory if possible, I think HM tomato soup. Bye. :wave:0 -
Thanks everyone for the welcome
I loved that article in an 'I hated that article' kind of way. I'm thankfully a long way off 55 but I can do most off that list.
I'm not sure that being able to do all that stuff makes you a 'good' cook though - more, it makes you a technically proficient one. It strikes me that 55 is about the age that most women (because lets face it, food is a woman's responsibility according to that article *rolls eyes*) suddenly don't have to worry about running round after the kids and have a bit more time and money to cook. Probably have a larger, nicer kitchen too (yes I'm generalising but not as much as that article!) Most people can cook a one-off posh meal if they've got just the right exotic ingredients, all the latest lah-di-dah kitchen gadgets, a huge kitchen and step-by-step instructions. To me being a 'good' cook is being able to put down tasty and reasonably nutritious meals day after day regardless of how inadequate your kitchen and how little time and money you've got.0 -
I read the cooking article. Is it me or does it imply that cooking is women's work? I've never made pasta nor will I. There is only DS here who eats it, and he is 3 so only little portions. What would be the point? And why should we be encouraged to bake cakes regularly? I thought cakes were bad for you? It was like reading something from the 1950s. Coincidentally, this is when the ladies in their mid-fifties will have been born. Hmm.
I thought it had a whiff of 'women belong in the kitchen but they can't even do that right, bless them' about it but maybe I'm having a bad day :rotfl:
The whole baking cakes things beats me too, especially since I keep seeing baking mentioned in context of the credit crunch. Nobody needs cake and although baking your own is much nicer, I don't really think it saves you money. I thinks it's a comfort thing.0 -
Stiltwalker and family :happyloveI must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.0 -
Just wanting to share what I've found. It's a free CBT course http://www.llttf.com/index.php called live live to the full. I don't think I have ever told you all this but being the way I am, and wanting to put my ghosts to rest about my upbringing I have done part of an open university psychology degree. Ever since I learned about CBT I've been interested in trying it out. This looks ok, enough to question my thinking anyway.

Maryb, my SS is like that. Anything cake wise/chocolate/treats it disappears with no thought to anyone else. I've taken to putting things in the fridge in our garage/hiding them/double wrapping them in poly bags (tied) with a label on saying "touch this and I'll chop your fingers off"! I went through him last new year when after being told do not touch x,y,z he helped himself to a carton of single cream and didn't tell me. I only found out in the evening after all the shops were shut when I was serving dessert to our guests and he'd gone out . Believe me he heard me the next day! I purposely told him off and then turned on every appliance in the house (he had a hangover
) and now I do all of the above so he won't touch things.

Am I correct in thinking that I can use kidney beans to bake blind my tart base?
Also, does anyone know if the bero book still exists? I do love my grandma's copy but it's on it's last legs  I'll be lost without it.0
