thanks everyone. It does sound a bit underhand but I guess if it's in the Ts & Cs there's not much we can do. He'll complain anyway but I guess it's his fault. Div.
I don't see how it underhand when they send you a statement saying "Payment will be taken on or after xx/xx/2012". If he decides not to put money in the account before that day, then he's going to incur overdraft charges.

Reality says tell him to start reading his statements instead of ignoring them as he appears to be doing.

I have just closed a Barclaycard and looking back at recent payments as an example.....

    Repayment on: 16/04/12
    Repayment on: 21/05/12
    Repayment on: 18/06/12
    Repayment on: 20/07/12
    Repayment on: 14/08/12
    Repayment on: 17/09/12

So some short and some long 'months'. I never realised, I just read the statement and made sure there was money in my current account to make the payment when it was due. Simple really.

Repayment on: 16/04/12 - 3rd Monday of the month
Repayment on: 21/05/12 - 3rd Monday of the month
Repayment on: 18/06/12 - 3rd Monday of the month
Repayment on: 20/07/12 - 3rd Monday of the month is 16th
Repayment on: 14/08/12 - 3rd Monday of the month is 20th
Repayment on: 17/09/12 - 3rd Monday of the month

August looks wrong but who knows

How could it possibly be "underhand"? Annoying yes, unnecessary yes, but what exactly are Barclaycard gaining by doing this?

I view Barclaycard as I view big banks - dimly. They must know that if they take dds on the 2nd and 30th of a month, when many people are paid on the last day of the month, they are going to be hit with 2 dds during one "pay" cycle. Hence more likelihood of banks charging for unauthorised overdrafts. It doesn't seem to happen with his other direct debits. DH found that 2 other blokes in his office have had the same thing happen this month. So yes, he's been an idiot but yes I do think it's an underhand way to catch people out.

And that has prejudiced your approach to this. Silly really. Since you have a dim view - you should have been expecting something like this to happen and been keeping a careful eye open.

Calendar months, when you get paid etc., really has nothing to do with it.

DDs are meant to make life easier. You don't have to worry about remembering to pay. But this just proves it - the more you do for people, the more they complain.

Personally I don't sign DDs. Statement comes, I check it. I get 3 weeks or so to pay. Assuming I agree the statement is correct, I pay. Perhaps one day I'll forget or mess up. If that happens, well I'll pay the charges and lose any particular deal I have running.

Actually I'm rather underhand about things myself. I sneakily leave it to the last minute to pay to maximise value. And when a BT deal comes to an end, I pay of the balance to deprive them of standard rate interest. They must be fuming!

All you are doing is defending someone who can't accept responsibility for his own finances and blaming the big bad banks.

You are still to acknowledge the fact that he also ignores his statements that clearly state when they are going to request the payment.

If things are that bad finacially that two payments in one month and possibly none the next or month before then a CC payment is the least of his worries.

Well that's hardly a surprise. Most people seem to - yet seem happy enough to fund their profits...

Again, why on earth would Barclaycard try and "catch you out"? They don't get a penny from your banks overdraft fees (even if you bank with Barclays, the two units are run separately). As I said, it's annoying and irritating, but I see no logical reason why they would deliberately do this to annoy you...

Have you posted before to say that BC didn't take a payment one month?

If a month means two payments then there needs to be a month with no payment.

I get an email from Barclaycard. It tells me exactly when they are going to collect my direct debit.

    As does the statement.
  • Easy to check on-line, too. To be fair, they do go out of their way to make you aware of the payment dates!

OP - I know you are irritated but thems is the rules. If you don't like them you need to pay off what you owe (or your OH does) and go somewhere else to play.
    ....Practically Perfect in Every Way......:grinheart
  • The most obvious solution hasn't been mentioned and isn't answered in the help online or in the account terms (at least not the ones I have!) so I'm assuming there must be a reason - don't Barclaycard allow you to change the statement date "period" then? (i.e. shunt it further into the month so that the payment date will always be after the 1st)
