2 DDs in one calendar month

Hi I wonder if anyone can advise

My DH has a barclaycard which he pays off monthly via direct debit. He's had a letter from his bank today to say that he's gone overdrawn, he never goes overdrawn, & when he's looked into it, he realised that Barclaycard took 2 direct debits within a calendar month, on 2nd and 30th October so 2 payments coming out of one month's salary (he is paid on 31st).

Is this common? He's fuming and of course I've given him the rounds of the kitchen for going overdrawn!

What did Barclaycard say when you queried it with them?

He's not back from work yet so I don't know. Just wondered if anyone else had come across it.

Well, it is 4 weeks apart, so it is possible.

But of course they'd send you a statement stating as such, so surely he would know when the payment was going to come out as it would be written on those statements.

If the payment came out without prior notification, you could chase Barclays about it.

Barclaycard do randomly vary their statement and collection dates, so 2nd and 30th sound feasible, they make this clear in their T&Cs, despite it being a bit underhand imho. Mine varies between 18th-24th (generally, sometimes more) each month and always has done.

Do Barclays issue 4 weekly statements rather than monthly ones?

No, they issue them whenever they see fit, it's around about a month. Been a BC customer for 7 years and its always been the same.

thanks everyone. It does sound a bit underhand but I guess if it's in the Ts & Cs there's not much we can do. He'll complain anyway but I guess it's his fault. Div.

    Thanks all

I found out that Barclaycard bill on a certain working day of the month.

If your cycle is 'Day 1' then the statement will come out on the first working day of the month.

That could be the 1st or, in the event that there's a Monday bank holiday, say, and the 1st is on a Saturday, the 4th of the month.

At its extreme if your payment cycle date coincides with Good Friday then it could well come on the fifth day.

Next month, if you are on 'Day 1' your statement will come out on the 3rd, as the 1st is a Saturday.

Reality says tell him to start reading his statements instead of ignoring them as he appears to be doing.

I have just closed a Barclaycard and looking back at recent payments as an example.....

    Repayment on: 16/04/12
    Repayment on: 21/05/12
    Repayment on: 18/06/12
    Repayment on: 20/07/12
    Repayment on: 14/08/12
    Repayment on: 17/09/12

So some short and some long 'months'. I never realised, I just read the statement and made sure there was money in my current account to make the payment when it was due. Simple really.

How could it possibly be "underhand"? Annoying yes, unnecessary yes, but what exactly are Barclaycard gaining by doing this?
