Paradoxically the type of cyclist to fall foul of this is not the red light jumper, who usually evades the problem by clearing the junction. It's usually the more 'guarded' cyclist, those whose caution and submissiveness makes them more vulnerable. Women cyclists are much more vulnerable to the left hand turning HGV, usually because they are more law abiding.

Law abiding doesn't come into it. No cyclist has to "jump a red light" to keep safe. Just far enough in front so they are able to see the driver & make sure he/she has seen them is plenty.

Getting yourself alongside a truck/bus at traffic lights/junctions will test your mortality to the limit..... don't do it, it's easy.

I would think that most left turning vehicles would be indicating their intention. In which case a cyclist should not be positioning themselves on the n/s of said vehicle. But, alas, they still do.

It's sad, it happens, often through a momentary failure to realise their mistake.
It's one of the reasons that HGVs are getting 'blind spot' cameras fiited, because they have recognised that driving into a space they cannot see is always going to carry a degree of liability.

    Hi,

To give a balance view I thought I'd start covering the other side of the fence.

Cyclists - Pay no road tax but expect the same rights as motor vehicle users

Cyclists - Consistently ride side by side just to be a pain the !!!

Cyclists - Get in the way.

Love the new forum keep up the good work!!
Always hug a cyclist!!!!! Its the way forward.

The point I'm making is that the RLJ law breakers don't die at junctions. The cautious law abiding pavement hugging cyclists are the group who are at much greater risk of dying.

I've stopped at traffic lights on my bike and had white van man pull alongside me at the red lights then force himself past to turn left. I stop at ASLs and cars pull alongside, wanting to turn left. If I put myself in the centre of the lane at the red light, I've had car drivers nudge me forward suggesting I shouldn't be there. I usually put myself in the queue in the centre of the lane on the approach to traffic lights rather than filter through; even then I'll get car drivers coming alongside, they don't think I'm entitled to a place in the queue.
It sometimes makes you question the common sense of stopping at red lights.

I am an ex racing cyclist, and I always had insurance. I never jumped red lights or scared people on crossings because to me that was interval training, I stopped, did a track stand, then sprinted to the next set of lights.
I always wore reflective clothing at nights and used very bright lights.

    Some cyclists are idiots

    Some car drivers are idiots

If you disagree with this, then you are an idiot.

WOW!! as per opening op's post what annoys you about cyclists?

That would be that they are cyclists!!

Kept it simple so that cyclists could understand!

I drive in Edinburgh every day/night and these people are mentally challenged at the best.

Sorry to the cyclist that has lights/reflective clothing and common sense!! and does not!! ploughs through red lights/pedestrian crossings/rides on pavements/shouts abuse at pedestrians to get out of his way/and has no knowledge of highway code.
These people have never driven/own cars as they live in major cities with good public transport and they use they use their bikes the rest of the time.
So they have no idea how dangerous they are let out on the streets/ pavements etc
