So what would you do if you see a cyclist in your nearside rearview, who clearly looks like he isn't responding to your left hand indicator and is now in a position where you would clip him if you turned left? Would you brake or would you take him out?

Not what I asked is it?

    No, you asked me to clarify a point, which I did by posing a further question. Your unwillingness to answer that question makes it abundantly clear that you now understand my point, which is this;

Of course every road user should read other road users signals, and act on them, but if they clearly haven't, there is a duty on all motorists to do what they can to prevent harm to that person.

    Nothing annoys me about cyclists.

But the one thing I don't get is, on roads where one side has a pavement the width of a lane and is clearly dedicated to pedestrians and bikes, why do some cyclists ignore the pavement and cycle on the road? It must be horrible being overtaken by all the lorries and cars doing 60mph that are annoyed at you for ignoring the massive cycle lane.
'til the end of the line

    Its not a cycle lane
its a pavement with a bit painted/tarred on
try going down there when theres been a frost
try doing 20mph with dogs, kids& peds wandering around
    most intersect with junctions
so you have to cross multiple roads
    etc etc
If its practical, why wouldnt people use it?

I dont mind cyclists going through red lights, I class them as pedestrians on the road anyway. Its the fast burgers doing 25mph that annoy me, its quite tricky getting past them

Many such routes are designed to encourage more people to cycle. Many would be cyclists are put off by lorries and cars, but would cycle if they could be guaranteed a car free route.

I would use such routes if I was out with my wife and kids, but not for commuting.

More 'assertive' cyclists tend to cycle with the urban traffic, they often cycle at or around the speed of the traffic, so their commuting speed is usually more appropriate for the road than the pavement.

There was a suggestion mooted recently that cyclists in UK should be allowed to treat red lights as a give way. It's a practice that has already successfully been introduced in many cities around Europe. http://www.londoncyclist.co.uk/should-cyclists-in-the-uk-be-allowed-to-go-through-certain-red-lights/

Just chill, and overtake only if safe for you and them. 25 mph is perfectly fast enough for the urban environment anyway.

    Hi,

To give a balance view I thought I'd start covering the other side of the fence.

Cyclists - Pay no road tax but expect the same rights as motor vehicle users - this has already been explained, there is no such thing as road tax, Winston Churchill abolished this, its vehicle emissions tax, my bike doesn't have an exhaust on it, therefore no tax

Cyclists - Consistently ride side by side just to be a pain the !!! - Read the highway code where it explains that cyclist are fully entitled to ride side by side

Cyclists - Get in the way. - erm, yes they have as much right to be on the road and were there before cars were, cyclist get in the way, so do buses, horses, chubby people using their car to drive a mile to the shop, children and, oh wait a minute everyone else in society

This just shows the level of ignorance out there amongst some road users. We need to learn a little patience and share the road space. Just because you spent thousands to sit in your little metal box and get all hot under the collar cause I zip through town at 3 times the speed on my rusty bike doesn't entitle you to own the road. Yes I see cyclist jump read lights, I also see thousands of car driver floor it when the lights are turning to amber, (the highway code says it means prepare to stop not speed up). I see motorists on the phone, putting on make up turning around and shouting at the kids. Go and look at the stats and see how many thousands of people are killed every year by a cyclist (tumble weed). Oh and by the way I own 2 cars so go and stereotype. Everyone can improve there road manners. This Country is almost unique in its car centric mentality, there are far too many cars on the road and far too many people getting all hot under the collar about getting no where fast, and the problem will only get worse. If we all rode a bike now and again for those shorter journeys, not only would it improve our health as a nation the world would be a better place and our children would be breathing in less fumes. Time to think outside the box people, and get some exercise, have a nice day
